PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Dear VTT Community,

Last week, our tech team, with guidance from our Tech Committee, deployed the grade 7 laptop program. This initiative has put laptops into the hands of every single seventh grader for use in all their classes. Every morning students retrieve their laptops from the cart, and then return them at the end of the day. Our senior students will also be using the laptops to complete the e-assessment parts of the provincial FSA tests.

Other tech developments at our school include the purchase of additional smart projectors for various grade 5, 6, and 7 classrooms and we are getting ready to launch an iPad pilot program in the primary grades with the purchase of 20 iPads.

Although good teaching is paramount to effective learning, technology, as a tool, is a wonderful enrichment to the overall student experience. Our faculty are enthusiastic about the curriculum enhancements they can now pursue, such as online drawing activities, digital camera scavenger hunts, web quests for research, Purim projects (with voice recordings) on Keynote, SmartBoard presentations, and science projects and experiments posted on YouTube, etc. Just as technology changes so rapidly, so must our technology goals in order to keep pace with constant change and innovation. Needless to say, creating and meeting the goals would not be possible without the expertise of our committee members and the willingness of our faculty to take risks and try new things.

On another note, I wish to thank all those involved in organizing last Tuesday's 5th Annual Community BINGO & Bagels Evening. A very special thank you to Liza Rozen-Delman, Sarah Schaffer and Tanya Jacobs for co-chairing the event. Todah Rabah to Rabbi Bellas and Gerrald Lotzkar for their teamwork in drawing and calling the numbers. Janice St. Helene did a wonderful job managing every aspect of the event and Sydney Antao and his dedicated crew of custodians were responsible for set-up and clean up. So many of the grade 7 parents lent a hand, and our community and corporate sponsors kindly donated both money and prizes to make the gathering extra special. See the list below and show your appreciation through your patronage!

Shabbat Parashat Yitro
Two Candles on a Friday Night

rabbi bellas

A question that often comes my way when I visit classes in our elementary grades or while I am leading Kabbalat Shabbat services in our school synagogue is: "Why do we light two candles on Shabbat?"  It really is an excellent question and part of the answer is found in this week's parasha/ Torah portion.

Parashat Yitro is the most dramatic Torah portion in the Torah.  In its first section, the Children of Israel arrive in the Land of Midian and are greeted by Moses' father-in-law, Yitro, after whom the parasah is named.  After hearing a retelling of the events of the plagues and the Exodus from Moses, Yitro observes his son-in-law serving a "Chief Justice" of the Jewish people.  Yitro advises Moses to appoint junior judges to deal with the people's minor cases, while he would deal only with the most complex ones in order to prevent "burn out."  Moses agrees and the people then set off for Mount Sinai, where they camp at the foot of the mountain to receive the commandments of the Torah.

Once the Children of Israel have been ritually prepared for the revelation of Torah, with the mountain of God rumbling and covered with clouds and smoke, with thunder rolling through the air, God delivers the Ten Commandments to the Children of Israel.  It is here that we find the beginning of our answer to the question about two candles on Shabbat.  Commandment #4 of the Ten Commandments is on the subject of Shabbat.  In our Torah portion, it begins with the words: "REMEMBER the Sabbath day, to keep it holy..."  The first word is crucial here it provides one source for the answer to our question.  However, this is only half of the answer because (and this may be a surprise to some) this is not the only time that the Ten Commandments are taught by Moses to the Children of Israel.

tu b'shvat

Tu B'Sh'vat celebrations were held throughout the school on Thursday, despite the snowfall! Grades 2 & 3 conducted seders and preschoolers made arts and crafts and feasted on fruit germane to the holiday. Kindergarten to grade 7 students assembled in the gym to donate their tree planting donation envelopes to the JNF, represented by the JNF Shaliach for BC, Micky Goldwein, as well as JNF forester, Kalil Adar. This year, due to the devastating Carmel fires, the PPP directed the money earmarked for Tu B'Shvat gifts to students to the JNF instead. It will be up to the discretion of the organization as to whether they wish to plant more trees or purchase a new fire truck.

During Tu B'Sh'vat, the birthday of trees, we are commanded "not to destroy" (Ba'al Tash'hit). In honour of this environmental celebration, Adam Shiff and Ya'el Kastiel, two fifth graders, organized a computer waste drive to help people properly dispose of their e-waste. Thanks to parent Brad Moldowan of GOGOGEEK for facilitating the removal of the FOUR BINS of junk through the responsible stewardship of E.R.A.

The students in the photo below loved piling into the bins so much that they were reluctant to hand them over for more computer donations.
