BINGO IS COMING!BINGO is an annual tradition at Vancouver Talmud Torah. This parent-run fundraiser helps raise money for our grade 7 Strathcona trip, a weeklong outdoor education program that has been a staple of our curriculum for 30+ years. Proceeds also support various fine arts initiatives at our school. This year new BC gaming regulations have been introduced preventing us from selling BINGO cards at the door. Therefore, all BINGO cards MUST BE PRE-ORDERED. To download an order form, click here. You may also pick up a copy at the office. Please return all completed forms with payment (cash or cheque made payable to VTT) by Friday, January 14th. BINGO is on Tuesday, January 18th from 5:30 p.m. and the committee needs sufficient time to prepare cards and food.BINGO is fun for the whole family and is appropriate for all age groups. There are many great prizes to be won as well as raffles and 50/50s. If you would like to donate a prize and have your business recognized or be a cash sponsor of this important fundraiser (and receive a full tax receipt), please contact Associate Director of Development, Audrey Moss at amoss@talmudtorah.comQuestions? Parashat Ha'Shavuah/Weekly Torah Portion with Rabbi Matthew Bellas
Shabbat Parashat B'shalah/Shabbat Shira The Shabbat of Song--In Memory of Debbie Friedman
Each year, when we come to the parasha/Torah portion of B'shalah, we mark what is called "Shabbat Shira"/"The Shabbat of Song." This Shabbat is so named because in the Torah portion itself is found the dramatic "Song of the Sea," the poem that Moses and the Children of Israel recited upon miraculously crossing through the Sea of Reeds to escape the on-coming Egyptian chariots of Pharaoh. In a spontaneous expression of jubilation and gratitude, the Children of Israel burst into song led by Moses and dance led by Miriam. Therefore, this week's parasha gives us an organic opportunity to celebrate Judaism's musical tradition each year. Sadly, the Jewish world lost one of the giants of Jewish spiritual and liturgical music this past week, so I take this opportunity to memorialize the great Debbie Friedman z"l in my D'var Torah this week. When Shabbat ends on Saturday night, Havdalah (the short service for concluding Shabbat) takes place within synagogues, youth groups, homes, camps, and any number of Jewish settings. Very often, when the time for the recitation of the blessings comes along, the uber-famous (at least in the Jewish world) repeating melody of "lai-lai-lai-lai-lai-lai-lai-lai" is the natural musical selection. During the Torah service on Shabbat morning, many congregations often join together for a musical version of the prayer for healing, "Mi Shebeirakh." Unbeknownst to many, both of these compositions are written by Debbie Friedman z"l. Read more online... Shabbat Shalom! Rabbi Matthew Bellas |
Getting Ready for Tu Bish'vat

This year, Tu Bish'vat, the Rosh Hashanah of Trees, is being celebrated on January 20th. In past years, our school has honoured the spirit of Tu Bish'vat by raising funds to plant trees in Israel through supporting the Jewish National Fund (JNF). This year, on account of the devastating fires in the Carmel region in the North of Israel, funds that are raised will be going to a) replant trees destroyed in the fire, and b) the purchase of a new JNF fire truck for the region.
To this end, JNF donation envelopes are being sent home with your children this week (please give envelopes to homeroom teachers, not the front office). On the morning of January 20th, our JNF student committee will be collecting donation envelopes and blue boxes from the school community - if your JNF blue box seems to be more than halfway full or "heavy with coins," please bring it in to school on Thursday, January 20th.
Additionally, to support the efforts to repair the Carmel region, the Parent Participation Program has chosen to allocate their Tu Bish'vat budget towards the replanting efforts, in lieu of their traditional Tu Bish'vat programming.
NOTE: Thursday, January 20 is NON-UNIFORM DAY. Students are requested to dress in JNF colours of BLUE, GREEN, BROWN & WHITE.
Todah Rabah,
Rabbi Matthew Bellas

NOT SURE WHAT TO DO WITH THAT ANCIENT HARD DRIVE? HAVE A FEW TOO MANY BROKEN PRINTERS LYING AROUND?
IS YOUR SCANNER ALL SCANNED OUT?
VTT Computer Recycling Initiative
In First Term, Grade 5 students created conservation plans for Vancouver Talmud Torah. Their goal was to make sure VTT was reusing, reducing and recycling as much as they could. Two students, Ya'el Kastiel and Adam Shiff focused on the particular idea to recycle electronics.
TWO DAYS ONLY! Monday and Tuesday, January 17 and 18 in the front lobby there will be collection boxes for your outdated or broken computer, monitor, printer, mouse, keyboard, scanner, cell phone, iPod, MP3 player, etc. Bring items in any time on Monday or Tuesday, including Bingo Night. BONUS! The computer recycler, E.R.A., will destroy all data on hard drives. Please NO TVs, appliances or other household items. The collection is for computer-related items only. It is especially relevant since this week is the Jewish holiday of Tu B'Shevat. This follows the principle of "Ba'al Tashchit - Do Not Destroy".

VTT is working in partnership with GoGoGeek on this important initiative. If you have any questions about what can be recycled or how to recover data before recycling, please contact Brad Moldowan or Wayne at 604-248-0782.
