Hello, Homeschoolers!
It's almost here! Summer is just around the corner. I always know summer is approaching because it's taking twice as long as it normally does to get through our schoolwork each day. This is due, I'm sure, to the mysterious fever known as "spring". It's funny how just a few days of 85 degree weather can turn our thoughts from science to swimming in a real hurry... but I won't tell if you won't!
This issue of FCHM's ezine is all about being REAL. Parents who homeschool sometimes face enormous pressure--- pressure to have "perfect" kids, pressure from curious neighbors and relatives who want to quiz the kids each time they see them (what is the square root of 249?) and pressure from other homeschoolers. It's often a real struggle to be honest about the day to day joys and frustrations of homeschooling. Why? Because being real means sharing your joys and your sorrows, your successes and your failures.
For years, I allowed other people's
expectations to set the pace of our homeschooling. Later, I let the
same mentality bring legalism into our homeschool. I
worried about my approach to education (classical? eclectic?
unschooling? school-at-home?) and soon I was overwhelmed and frustrated. To schedule or not to schedule? Should we sew our own clothes? Garden? Bake our own bread from wheat we grew in our little city garden? What if I didn't like gardening? What if my kids didn't mind store-bought bread?
I will never forget the day when my mini-van pulled up in front of the church for our homeschool co-op classes and the evidence of half eaten Happy Meals fell out from the sliding door. My "fast-food secret" was out. God must have been laughing at my embarrassment over such a small thing. But it didn't feel small to me. I was trying to live up to an expectation that didn't come from the Lord, and our kids were living with it, too.
Thankful for His Grace, Heidi St. John
Jay and Heidi St. John have been married for over 18 years and are the homeschooling parents of six children who range in age from sixteen to two. Heidi speaks to mothers with humor and grace on many subjects dealing with homeschooling. If you are interested in having the St. Johns speak at your event, please contact them through FCHM.

by Sonya Haskins
My mom is here visiting with my family this week. She lives about four hours away and tries to come visit us about once a year. We are always very thankful for her visits and enjoy seeing her during this time and the times we go visit her at her home.
It used to be very difficult for my mom and I to get along. She had a very rough childhood with an incredibly abusive father who damaged her in ways you cannot imagine. I was conceived when she was 16 and 1970 was not a good time to have an illegitimate child. Three and a half years after I was born, she had my little brother. Life was always very difficult and we lived in many bad situations. Sometimes we didn't even live together and I finally moved out when I was 13. I just didn't appreciate the situation we were in and I also didn't understand that she couldn't do a lot about it. She was trying, but life was very difficult.
Sonya Haskins lives with her husband Chris and their five children in Upper East Tennessee. Sonya has a passion for ministering to homeschool families and her latest book, The Homeschooler's Book of Lists (Bethany House 2007) was written specifically to make planning and fact-finding easier for homeschool families. Please visit www.sonyahaskins.com, where you can read more about the book, the Haskins family's homeschool adventures, essays related to homeschooling, and much more. |

THE NATIONAL VOICE OF HOMESCHOOLERS
By Rod Nelson
Recently I was able to spend some quality time with Jay and Heidi St. John, the founders of First Class Homeschool Ministries. This was not, standing and talking after a meeting or running into them at the store. I spent quality time, sitting in their living room, having an extended conversation with them. I was able to see the passion that they have for reaching people and their desire to give much needed support to homeschoolers across the country.
They also shared some of the challenges that they face: finding people to step up and start new co-ops, finding churches that are supportive to homeschoolers, helping existing co-ops grow as well as the financial challenge of getting FCHM off of the ground. At the moment FCHM is not large enough to support itself. FCHM is financially held up by membership fees, donations and supporters.
Thank you and God bless,
Rod Nelson
Rod and Zindra Nelson have been married for 11 years and they have exclusively homeschooled their four children ages nine to two. Rod is in Sales. They both serve on the First Class Skagit County Board. Rod is also a well loved First Class Teacher.
