Dare to Dream

       Vivid Sydney       (27 May - 21 June 2010)

Our festival of light, music and ideas returns this year, once again featuring the spectacular illumination of the Sydney Opera House sails.

The festival celebrates
Sydney as the creative hub of the Asia Pacific with large scale light installations and projections; free family events; music performances; creative ideas, discussion and debate.

Sydney Opera House will be the focal point of Vivid Sydney with the lighting of the sails and Vivid LIVE - a music festival with a difference, co-curated by Laurie Anderson and Lou Reed.

STUDENT OF THE MONTH - KEVIN VU

Kevin is a 15 year old boy coming from Vietnam who won an Australian scholarship to study at Taylor's College.  When he was in Vietnam, he heard a lot of good things about Australia, especially about the education system.

He enjoys playing soccer, listening to music, reading books and not to forget food, especially his Grandma's fried rice.

He found that his culture is very different from Australian culture.  He tends to eat more rice there but here he has to adjust to eating more bread and pastas.  The school hours are also quite different here in Australia.

When he was 7 years old, he went to Thailand and he liked it very much.  Although he was lost in one of the shopping malls when he was in Bangkok.  He found the food there also amazing.

Kevin also said that he likes Australia a lot, especially the beach, soccer field and some public places such as Opera House and Darling Harbour.  He found the people here are also very friendly.

He is fortunate enough to stay in a good homestay.  He watches a lot of good movies at the cinema with them.  He is currently taking Japanese lessons and the Host Mother and her daughter help him with that since they are also keen to learn Japanese.

DARE TO DREAM

                                                                                        By Chris Lloyd

The rewards of life come to those who do, not to those who merely read, talk or day dream.  Action is the key.  I would like you to answer this question "In December of last year did you achieve all you set out to achieve in January of the same year?"  If you are like most people, the answer is probably "no".

Next question "Did you set out to achieve anything last year?"  Aha! Now that's a more interesting question I think.  Deciding at the start of a year that you want to achieve a certain result by the end of that year, is an example of our old friend goal-setting.

High performance people set goals.  Winners set goals.  Losers never set goals.  Why?  Because it takes about 20 minutes of concentrated effort to write down your goals and losers have far more important things to do than this.  It interferes with valuable boozing time, for example.  Such a task would take up nearly a whole episode of a soap opera.  You could read a trash newspaper from cover to cover in this time.

But there is a more important reason why many people don't write goals.  It is this.  Writing goals commits you to action otherwise there is little point in writing them.

Turning your dreams (goals) into reality will not happen automtaically.  It will require work and effort.

"Oh my God!  Work and effort?  Forget it Man!  I'm not writing down anything on a piece of paper which will commit me to that!"

This is why people do not set goals.  They cannot bear to have that piece of paper leering at them in silent accusation as the months tick by.

But what is at stake here?  Nothing less than undreamed of wealth, unlimited happiness and a totally fulfilled life.  Perhaps more importantly you can meet your fear head on and live like a warrior, not a frightened rabbit.

Achieving great wealth and happiness starts with having a dream.  Today's dreams are surely tomorrow's realities.  So you blew it last year?  You have a chance to redeem yourself this year - if you have guts of course.

Got any fight left in you or have you thrown in the towel long ago?  Are you shivering, frightened little mouse or a human being prepared to fight and win?  Are you going to spend the rest of this year bleating and moaning about how you cannot be succeeded?  Or are you going to do something about making your own success a reality?

"The thing always happens that you really believe in; and the belief in a thing makes it happen."

- Frank Loyd Wright -
