Get Flexible!

Flexibility is a great idea for 2009. So I am doing more stretching.

But it seems that the universe took the intention to stretch a little further than I meant. I'm finding that in 2009 I need to be flexible not just in my physical body, but in other aspects of my life as well.

On January second I flew to BC to visit my parents for a week. While there, I learned that With Child, the store I had been renting for classes for some time, had closed. (My sympathies go to Tina, the longtime owner and a parenting support to many of us.) With classes beginning the second week of January and me on the other side of the country, I needed to make some quick arrangements. With my husband's support - he was in Toronto and did most of the work - we shifted my classes to our house. I hadn't planned to teach at home in 2009 but that's how the year has begun and I just might keep it like that.

I am not the only person being flexible. My son has been open to returning to York University for weeks now, since the strike began in November. In the meantime he has been able to increase his working hours and play a lot of hockey. In fact, he tells me that all that outdoor shinny is having a pretty good effect on his points in his indoor hockey league. And what perfect cold weather we have been having for the outdoor rinks! Not the year he planned but I bet there are some other hockey players who envy all that ice time.

These circumstances requiring flexibility pale next to some of my clients' recent births. One couple found themselves in labour at just 34 weeks. They showed their adaptability when they put fear aside, and birthed (naturally) a five pound baby boy in just a few hours. The birth they wanted, even if not quite the timing they had expected. And he is doing so well at breathing and breastfeeding that he was home in one week rather than several weeks!

Another client found herself in labour when her husband was in hospital. As her doula I watched her accept her situation and then put her focus on the birth she had planned - at home in a large, warm rented tub. And she is so pleased with her short, natural birth. Her husband, who came home the following week, was delighted to meet his baby daughter and pleased to see the birth through the photos I took.

Of course we don't plan for venues to change, strikes to delay education, or less than ideal birth circumstances. But we can choose how we respond to these unexpected changes. Rather than allow them to derail us we can put our focus on creating the best possible situation. And sometimes we find in ourselves a little bit more than we thought we had.

Congratulations to two flexible families who birthed in January! And congratulations to all of you who have found more determination, wisdom and flexibility than you thought you had.

RESEARCH

Women Who Take Maternity Leave Before Birth Have Reduced Risk of C-section
Last month I reported on a study linking low levels of Vitamin D in pregnant women with an increased rate of Caesarean section. Here's another study looking at factors associated with C-sections.

Women who took maternity leave in the last month of their pregnancy were almost four times less likely to have a primary C-section as women who worked through until labour.  The researchers note that Americans (the study was done in Berkeley, California) unlike many cultures, do not have a culture of resting in preparation for birth.

Many women arrange to leave work at 38 weeks to rest, make final preparations, and shift their focus from working woman to mother.

The study was published in Women's Health Issues in January.

RESEARCH

Timing of C-Sections

Babies born by planned Cesarean section are healthier if born after 39 weeks. A study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that babies born via a scheduled C-section before the 39th week of pregnancy were more likely to have breathing problems that required a ventilator, infections, and low blood sugar. The study involved 13,258 cesarean sections done at 19 medical centers from 1999 to 2002.

Babies born in their 37th or 38th week had a higher incidence of birth-related adverse outcomes, including respiratory problems and sepsis (serious infection), than babies delivered in their 39th week, according to the study. Those born at 37 weeks were twice as likely, and those born at 38 weeks 50 percent more likely, to have a problem than those at 39.

"Even those surgical births done about three days prior to 39 weeks still have an increase in these adverse outcomes," noted Dr. Alan Tita of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, lead-author of the study.

Women planning a Cesarean birth for medical reasons may want to discuss the timing of the surgery in light of these findings.

A
HypnoBirthing Gathering
of New and Expectant Parents
was held Sun Feb 1
at Withrow Park Clubhouse.

Thank you to all the couples who shared their wonderful birth stories with each other and with expectant couples.

We heard stories of quick births at home and in the hospital. Women commented that the sensation they experienced in labour was pressure, not discomfort.
Many loved labouring in water; several remembered relaxing on the toilet at the end of labour. One mother birthed standing up, her position of choice for much of her labour; one dad received his baby. One woman simply said that she loved giving birth. Another was grateful for the support of her doula.

Couples commented on their caregivers' (nurses, doctor and midwives) support for HypnoBirthing, a sign that the movement is growing.

Some people reunited with their classmates, some still pregnant, others with babies in arms.

Thank you for believing in peaceful birth and creating those wonderful births for yourselves and your babies.
And thank you for inspiring others with your positive stories!

I look forward to our next gathering in the spring!
