This exercise is recommended by one of HypnoBirthings foremost trainers and educators. It gives another perspective on the Law of Attraction and asks us to look at what we are attracting that we really want less of. And then gives us the tools to focus on what we really do want.
More/Less List By Sherry Gilbert, HBCE
I'm sure there are as many different ways to get the Law of Attraction working for you as there are people, but here's the one that works best for me. I begin by making a More/Less list. Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle. On one side, write More Of and on the other write Less Of. Give yourself a specific amount of time to fill in both sides. I typically allot 5-10 minutes.
Fill in what you want more of in your life and what you want less of in your life. The time limit is important; it encourages you to go with your gut rather than intellectualize the exercise.
Once you've completed this, take a look at how many things are in the 'less of' column. These are all the places you're spending your energy drawing all of the things you don't want in to your life. So, now you need to re-phrase them. For example, if I have 'less stress' on my list, what do I really want? More peace? More time? More fun?
Once I figure it out, I can add it to my more of list. Remember that whatever you're thinking about, speaking about, etc, is what you are drawing to you, so how much are you wasting by focusing on the 'less of' side of your paper?
Once you've successfully re-stated all of your 'less ofs' and moved them to the 'more of' side, it's time to pick one to work with for now. Pick the one you wish to start with (unless you have a couple that are really tied to each other) and really begin to flesh out what they look like. So, if I've decided I want more fun in my life, what might that look like? Who might I be having fun with? How will it feel? How will it smell? How will it taste? How will my life be different? Being a hypnotherapist, my method for this is meditation, but you can write a scenario in your journal, tell it to your friends, but really flesh it out and think about it, create anchors for it, etc.
I do that for anywhere from a day to a week before adding the next step. Once you've added the next step, it's still very important to keep visualizing what you want.
The next step is what are one to three things I CAN and WILL do NOW to put this in motion? They can be small or big, but do them.

Greetings!

I just love my job! It brings me emails like the ones below that remind me that birth isn't just one day in our lives; it's a lifetime of memories.
"I remember feeling completely relaxed, calm, and really not in any pain to speak of, which I attribute entirely to the HypnoBirthing course so I just wanted to say thank you." L
"I got your newsletter and thought I'd send a quick hello. We still tell our birth story to all our friends who are expecting and even had one friend who decided to do HypnoBirthing after borrowing our book and hearing our story.
"I have fond and joyous memories of Q's birth and attribute my ability to enjoy the birth to my HypnoBirthing classes. I still marvel at how wonderous my body is and how well B and I were able to work together to bring Q into the world. Even the midwife said she had never seen a mother so calm throughout a birth, nor had she witnessed two people so in tune with each other as B and I were.
"Thank you again for showing us that we could enjoy a comfortable birth that brought us closer together as a couple and a family." B
These reflections serve to remind us of how important it is to plan, prepare and direct our births - to act in the way that we can be most proud of, and that is in the best interests of our babies.
These comments also remind me to thank you all for allowing HypnoBirthing to help you achieve the best possible births for yourselves and your babies. I am also grateful to you for telling your positive birth stories to others and for telling your friends about HypnoBirthing. It is always so much fun to hear from someone in a new class that a past client has referred them and to get an update on your family. And it is such a privilege to be a part of your preparation for birth.
The HypnoBirthing Community is growing quickly in Toronto and you are the reason!
Wishing you all positive birth memories. May you experience the peace and satisfaction of knowing that you birthed in the best way possible for you and your baby at this time in Toronto.
Looking forward to seeing you Oct 8 at WITH CHILD. (See left column for details.)

Leah and Darcy emerge from their month long 'baby-moon' (a bonding and adjustment period after the baby is born) to announce the birth of their baby girl.
The Birth of Lola
On Friday August 8th (our guess date) I awoke at 4 am with mild cramping, hoping that this was the beginnings of labour. Not wanting to be overly optimistic I decided to get some more sleep, not wake Darcy, and see how things progressed. We both awoke around 8am and decided to start our day, hopeful that this was it. From 4am till 9am I had experienced mild surges coming regularly every 10 minutes. At 9am the intensity subsided and the surges became very irregular occurring about every 20-25 minutes. We were pretty sure that this was the end of one chapter and the beginning of a whole new one, but since it seemed to be in the very early stages we decided to carry on with our day as if was any other ordinary day. We went to our favourite coffee shop for breakfast, ran a few errands, and went for a walk; neither one of us willing to admit what was in the process of happening. We arrived back at home around 1pm and contacted our midwife, Christie. The surges were still very mild and erratic and Christie said that while it did sound as if what I was experiencing was labour it was still early and to call her if the surges progressed to about 5 minutes apart. Failing receiving a call from us she would come by and visit us around 7pm.Darcy and I set about accomplishing a few tasks around the house, watched a movie and had dinner. At 7pm our midwife arrived to examine me, and discovered that I was 4cm dilated, though the surges that I was experiencing were still very erratic and in her eyes not strong enough to push a baby out. She stayed with us at the house until 8pm, during which time I only experienced three mild surges; we were told that we would be having this baby some time this weekend, but not tonight. She suggested that we go for a walk and gave us instructions to call when the surges progressed to 6-7 minutes apart. We cancelled our plans for that evening and thinking that we were going to be at this for a bit Darcy and I decided to walk over to get ice cream and a movie. During the very short walk to the movie store my surges became much more intense -- I now had to stop and breath through them. Darcy held me during them and reminded me to stay relaxed. When we made it to the movie store we quickly picked a movie, still anticipating that we could be at this for hours, and grabbed some ice cream and headed for home. During the walk home the surges became more intense and as soon as we walked in the door the movie was thrown on the couch, the ice cream in the freezer and we headed up stairs to relax in the birthing tub. While we were in the tub Darcy led me through a deepening practice and supported and talked me through each surge. At this point Darcy recognized that the surges were becoming more consuming and coming much faster; he got out of the tub to get a watch (we had no clock in the birthing room). During the time it took him to walk down the hall I had two very intense surges, and we decided that rather than time the surges Darcy would just page our midwife and let her know that things were quickly progressing. We paged Christie at 9pm, and she phoned us back and said that she was on her way.At this point I wanted to get out of the tub and move to the bed for the birth; during the move down the hall I experienced five very intense surges, one right after the other, and I barely had time to breath before another was on its way. Darcy supported me (physically and emotionally) during these surges. He remained positive and kept reminding me that every surge brought us one step closer to having our precious baby. Darcy paged the midwife a second time at 9:18pm -- "Leah says hurry."At 9:20pm Christie arrived and found that I was 10cm dilated and ready to birth. Our second midwife had not yet arrived and Christie wasn't set up yet, so I was given instructions to do my best to ignore the wishes of my body and hold the baby in.At 9:58pm the second midwife arrived and my membranes -- which at this point were bulging and were the only thing keeping the baby from being born -- were released. At 10:27pm on 08/08/08, after a few pushes, Lola Montgomery was born. She weighed in at 6lbs 13 oz and measured 20 inches, and both mom and dad were immediately in love and amazed at the entire birth process. While the process was incredibly quick it was also amazingly intense and the techniques from the hypnobirthing classes allowed us to maintain a sense of control and calm over a crazy process. Being at home during this entire experience was amazing, the greatest thing being that for the majority of the process it was just Darcy and me hanging out. It made Lola's birth an incredibly personal and intimate experience. All our best to you and all your HypnoBirthing babies!Leah + Darcy +Lola

Reducing Likelihood of Premature Release of Membranes
The release of membranes before surges begin occurs about 10 % of the time. Most often surges and labour follow within a few hours. When membrane release is not soon followed by labour there is concern that an infection may develop in the uterus. For this reason women may be encouraged to induce labour naturally or artificially after a certain amount of time has passed, usually between 12 and 24 hours. A Mexican study looked at reducing the incidence of premature release of membranes (PROM) by providing vitamin C supplements for better maintenance of the chorioamniotic membranes. A controlled double-blind trial assigned 120 women to one of two groups: 100 mg of Vitamin C from 20 weeks gestation or a placebo. The incidence of PROM was 14 per 57 pregnancies (24.5%) in the placebo group and 4 per 52 pregnancies (7.69%) in the supplemented group. The study concludes that daily supplementation with 100 mg vitamin C after 20 wk of gestation effectively lessens the incidence of PROM.

To Sweep or Not to Sweep, That is the Question
'Sweeping' or 'Stripping the Membranes' or a 'Stretch and Sweep' is a common procedure performed by midwives and doctors at about 38 weeks or later to nudge a woman into labour. The caregiver attempts to move the membranes (amniotic sac) off the cervix with her finger during a vaginal exam. The goal is to cause a release of prostaglandins resulting in a softening of the cervix.
One recognized risk is causing a premature (before surges start) release of membranes. A study published in Obstet Gynecol 2008 June examined the value of membrane sweeping. Three hundred women with healthy pregnancies were randomized into 2 groups - sweep at 38 weeks and each subsequent week until birth, and no membrane sweeping.
The study found no significant difference in the incidence of premature membrane release in the two main groups. The study did find that women with cervical dilation ≥1 cm in the sweep group had a higher incidence of prelabour membrane release than similarly dilated women in the no-sweep group. Other obstetric outcomes including caesarean birth, spontaneous labour, induction and postmaturity were similar in both groups.
The study concludes that membrane sweeping has neither great value nor great risk, with the exception of women already dilated 1 cm or more who may be at higher risk of premature release of membranes.
