HB logoWelcome!

Spring is here; I can feel the earth coming back to life. And I am so excited to be bringing to life HypnoBirthing News.

This newsletter gives me an opportunity to keep in contact with you as you journey through pregnancy and into parenting. And it is an opportunity for you to share your journey with others.

I look forward to receiving your birth stories and parenting tips to include in future newsletters. Many thanks to Janet and Ryan for sharing the story of their daughter's birth and to Sandra and Paul for allowing me to include the wisdom they gained from their birthing and early parenting experience.

I hope you'll forward this newsletter to friends, family and colleagues so that more parents and babies can experience calmer, more satisfying births. I am so grateful to all of you for your commitment to birth and babies and so very indebted to HypnoBirthing for showing us the way.

Recent research

DELAY CORD CLAMPING

A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) has found that delaying the clamping and cutting of the baby's umbilical cord benefits the baby for months after birth.

Until now it has been common practice for most practitioners to cut the cord within a minute of the birth. This research suggests that keeping the cord attached for two or more minutes allows the baby to receive more of its own blood. Increasing the baby's blood volume increases the baby's iron stores and the white blood cells that contribute to immunities.

Canadian epidemiologist and midwifery professor, Eileen Hutton, authored the study and believes that parents should talk with their caregivers about this research.

Many midwives are already practicing this delay in cord clamping.

THE BIRTH OF GRETA- MARCH 5, 2007

"We are immensely pleased to announce the arrival
of  Greta, weighing in at a respectable 7lbs. 12oz.  She was born at home after a flawless, non medicated birth.  My midwives tell me it was a  short labour though it didn't feel so short at the  time!

The birth tub was wonderful.  We set it up in
the living room and I spent most of my active labour
in the tub.  Much to my surprise I was almost
totally silent and entirely calm through out.  I
listened to my CD over and over again.  The
familiar, calm voice was very soothing.
I must admit I did not  'breath my baby down'  but
pushed for all I was worth (no regrets there).
About 2/3 of the way through active labour they
offered to break my water and I agreed.  The
membrane was very full and pressing hard on my lower belly which wasn't allowing me to get a break
between contractions. Breaking the membrane really helped.

I have to say I much preferred the intense
pushing stage to the longer, more ambiguous active
stage.   That part is  tiring and progresses much
slower.

The pushing is intense to say the least but there
is nothing like the feeling of having that baby come
out.  Disbelief, elation, relief, amazement....
For me I really focused on the part of the CD
where it says 'each surge brings my baby closer to
me'.  I was getting pretty tired and uncomfortable
being pregnant at the end that I was completely
looking forward to contractions and 'getting this
show on the road'

Paul and Sandra are right. (See their advice below.) Sleep through the early stage as much as possible.  Ryan and I timed for a few hours.  We got to 3-4 minutes apart at about 2 am and then as we had the phone in hand they went back up to 8 min.  I sent Ryan to bed figuring  it would be best for one of us to get as much sleep as possible.  I continued timing and cat napping
through out the night.  I didn't really sleep but I
rested as much as possible through moderate
strength, early surges.  I woke Ryan sometime in the
early'ish' morning ( not sure when)  I called the
midwife around 6:30 am to let her know that things
were progressing.  She checked in again at 8am and
again around 10:30 am by phone and came over around noon.  I was 6cm by the time she arrived.  She
stayed with us the rest of the way.  I was 10 cm by
about 4:30 and then the fun really began.  My 2nd
midwife showed up around 5 and Greta was born at
6:30 pm.

As for my labour signs....My contractions never
got regular.  They would begin to establish a
rhythm, then slow way down for a while,  then build
again, etc...  I had some mucus but no significant show and I could talk through my contraction right up to the very last stage. The funny thing is the part I found most intense was whenever they checked my cervix.  The surges were manageable but I found any touch to my cervix hard to bear.

We let the cord stop pulsing which took quite a
while, and let the placenta come out on its own.  I
did not need any needles. Baby did receive the
vitamin k shot and eye cream about an hour or more
after she was born.  Besides a slight squawk she
went right back to sleep.

And my little over achiever pooped 9 times in the
first 20 hours!...."

ADVICE FROM NEW PARENTS

1) If you think you'll need an item for the baby, buy it now and keep the receipt for a refund or store credit. Hopefully this will prevent you from running fewer errands during the 1st week with your baby. Note, Toy's r Us has a 45 days return/exchange policy.

2) When buying items, open the box and ensure the item is BRAND new. We've picked up a coupleof items where there were stains on the item and had
to return them.

3) When buying tops/sleepers for your baby, buy the ones with buttons, not the ones where it's like a t-shirt where you have to pull it over the baby's head.

4) REST REST & REST on the days or hours preceding labour. I cannot stress this enough. DON'T have guests over. JUST rest; sleep is good.

5) TRY to sleep during pre-labour. Depending how long your labour will be, you'll need all the sleep/energy for later.

6) Visit or call your hospital and inquire about before pregnancy and after birth breastfeeding sessions. Do research on breastfeeding NOW, so you'll be familiar with the different techniques and positions.

7) If you need oral Vitamin K (without a doctor's prescription), you can order it online at:
www.birthwithlove.com and click on Vitamin K
We ordered it from them and the package arrived 3-4 days later.
