FALL 09

With shovels, cartons, and stakes in hand, and the help of a wildlife biologist from the East Bay Municipal Utility District, the Girl Scouts from Troop 2029 learned how to properly plant a potted elderberry bush.  Troop 2029 and their parents generously volunteered their time, efforts, and hard work to help with the restoration along the Mokelumne River.  The girls now have a hand in converting an old vineyard and sandy bottom field into a wonderfully biologically diverse riparian habitat area, a significant contribution to the ecological health of our watershed.

Girl Scout's Highest Awards are Changing over the coming months the Program Department is visiting Service Unit meetings to review the changes to the Girl Scout Bronze, Girl Scout Silver and Girl Scout Gold Awards.  Please note there is a 2 year transition period for these new award guidelines.  They will become official in October 2011 (beginning of the 2011-2012 membership year). If the majority of project work will be done during the 2012 membership year, these new guidelines should be used.

Community Recognition for Girl Scout Members
In October, Ashley Sawyer and Toni Rubin were recognized for their outstanding volunteer commitment to Girl Scouts by Dovia (Directors of Volunteers in Agencies) and the Volunteer Center of Sacramento.  Ashley was nominated for Youth Volunteer of the Year and Toni was nominated for Lifetime Achievement in Volunteerism.  Ashley is a senior in high school and currently serves as associate editor for the council girl publication Hear and Now.  She was nominated for the volunteer time committed to earn her Girl Scout Silver Award by serving the needs of children at Mercy San Juan Hospital.  Toni has been a Girl Scout for over 25 years and serves our council as a member of the board of directors and a council adult learning facilitator.  Toni was instrumental in the design and implementation of all the online adult education courses available to adult volunteers.  Congratulations to you both and thank you for your tireless dedication to Girl Scouts Heart of Central California!

Liz Williams - 2009 Volunteer of the Year
Liz Williams, an active Master Educator in Northern California, has been a tremendous Leave No Trace champion for almost a decade.  Working tirelessly as the California State Advocate, Liz has trained thousands of people in Leave No Trace, educated youth of all ages and worked with recreational communities all over California.  As a professional staffer for the Girl Scouts, Liz has consistently promoted Leave no Trace through her organization and has made it standard operating procedure for Girl Scouts in both California and across the U.S.  Liz has assisted with numerous Master Educator Courses in California as well as lead dozens of Leave No Trace Trainer Courses over the years.  Her collective efforts to promote Leave No Trace have been a primary reason for the success of the program in California.
