FALL 2009 .

The Joys of Summer

Summer is one of our favorite times of year for Girl Scouts.  Girls are given countless opportunities to discover, connect and take action in a myriad of areas at day camps and resident camps.  Girls learn everything from becoming business owners at Malls to Marketing, which you'll read about later, to those quintessential camp experiences of canoeing, horseback riding and making lasting friendships.

With over 7,000 girls participating in our expansive summer programs, we are reminded that Girl Scouts continues to thrive, even during these difficult times.  We're sure many of you are curious as to the health and vitality of Girl Scouts Heart of Central California.  While we have not been immune to the struggling economy, the organization and it's resources are being stewarded wisely.

As many of you have done in your business and at home, we have implemented cost-saving measures as well as leveraged every natural opportunity available to us.  All in all, we find ourselves on stable financial footing.

Our security allows us the freedom to begin looking towards the future.  The new Girl Scout year is quickly upon us and the council is busy planning another twelve months of innovative, cutting-edge programs for the girls in our lives.  We can't wait to see what else they have in store!

As always, we welcome your feedback and input.  In addition, for more information on each of the amazing opportunities available to Girl Scouts, visit

Girl Scouts has a long and rich tradition of honoring the amazing women in our communities who have helped shape the millions of women in our movement.  Girl Scouts Heart of Central California felt is was critical to provide each of us the opportunity to recognize those women that have impacted our individual lives.  The Mothers and Others campaign is designed to provide you a venue for paying tribute to the woman or women that have played an essential role in making you the individual you are today.

To date, 21 members of the community have given over $2,100 to honor those women that have touched their lives.  To read more about these amazing individuals and to honor that special woman in your life, visit www.girlscoutshcc.org/donate and click on the Mothers and Others link.
Long gone are the days where Girl Scouts were limited to crafts, cookies and camping.  Today's Girl Scout is given the opportunity to put her entrepreneurial spirit to the test.  This summer's day camp options include Malls to Marketing - a four-day intense journey into business development, management and ownership.

Girls, grades 7th through 12th, met with women business owners at the Folsom Premium Outlet mall, learned about the inner-workings of IKEA and fine-tuned their interview skills.  Their lessons were put to the test at the end of camp when girls, broken into business teams, had to create their own company and present their product idea to prospective clients.  Teams were evaluated based on their marketing and sales plans, product design, and manufacturing process.

Some of the amazing companies that were generated by the Malls to Marketing teams were:

Paws & Claws: a pet store that sells pets and the pet supplies all made from recycled goods
Pretty Plungers: custom designed toilet plungers that make this dirty job look good
Jinx Soda: a soda that could change flavors depending on what you wanted it to taste like
Candy Creations: custom-made candy in any desired flavor and shape
Spotlight Shoes: the ideal shoe line for women who like fashion by want comfort, long lasting products

Look out America - a new wave of women entrepreneurs are ready to take the nation by storm!
