Celebration a Seussian Success!
 | | Alumni B.J. Hill, Devon Rich, Matthew Selker and Leia Greathouse |
The Hall of Mirrors at the Hilton Netherland
Plaza looked like a page from a Dr. Seuss
book as 300 of Springer's friends and family gathered for A Springer Celebration! 2012. In keeping with the theme "Oh, the Places You'll Go!" four Springer alumni spoke about the places they've gone since they left Springer.
Alumni who shared their stories were Leia Greathouse '00, B.J. Hill '97, Devon Rich '96 and Matthew Selker '96. "Going to school and learning were painful, frustrating and demoralizing," said Leia of her early experience. Once at Springer, she said, "I no longer pretended to be sick in a transparent attempt to hide, but became so involved in my learning that I independently sought out my teachers, asking for more homework so I could prepare for what I thought high school would be like."
Our thanks to Event Chair Nancy Cooper for a successful and memorable evening. "I am honored to have been the 2012 Springer Celebration Chairperson," said Nancy, "and look forward to being a friend of Springer for many years to come."
Thanks also to Committee Chairs Julie Morrow and Shannon Plymire (Silent Auction), Ann Small-Wills (Decorations) and Betsy Ayres (Volunteers).
A Springer Celebration! 2012 raised $112,000 for financial aid and outreach programs.

| Upper School Students Tour Washington, D.C.
Upper School students packed a wealth of experiences into their 4 day trip to Washington D.C. On the evening of their April 24 arrival, they were able to visit the Jefferson Memorial and US Marine Corps War Memorial, lighted up for the night.
The next two days were filled with visits to memorials to wars and famous Americans, a stop at Mount Vernon, an afternoon of touring the Smithsonian Museums and a tour of the Capitol. The students also visited Arlington National Cemetery, and were honored to have the opportunity to

present a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. A most memorable event was their final stop at the 911 Memorial and Pentagon.
This inspirational trip was made possible by the generosity of Bill and Margy Gale, through their support of the Oliver Gale Washington Academy, founded in memory of Bill Gale's father.

Persistence PaysSpringer 1996 graduate Michael Horwitz dreamed of being an architect. He repeatedly asked for a job at an architecture firm until they hired him, but then told him he needed to get his degree. Michael became a proactive advocate for himself at Morgan State University, slowly weaning himself from accommodations as he learned to work independently. This spring he graduates from Morgan State with a Master's degree in architecture. |

| Psychologist Travels 7,000 Miles to Hear Dr. Barkley
When Springer and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center hosted ADHD expert Dr. Russell Barkley in April, one member of the audience had traveled thousands of miles to attend the presentation.
Tagreed Zagzoog lives in Saudi Arabia and has been a follower of Dr. Barkley's work for years. She learned of his Cincinnati presentations on his website, and combined her trip with a visit to family in West Virginia.
Dr. Barkley's parent presentations were attended by 1,065 parents over two evenings, and 342 educators and clinicians participated in his day-long workshop for professionals.

"I wouldn't be where I am without Springer"
Elizabeth Bible, 2003 Springer graduate, credits Springer with her success in college. "I knew what strategies I needed, and what help I needed from the people around me," she says. "I became a strong self-advocate." Elizabeth graduated from the College of Mount St. Joseph in December, 2011, with a degree in general studies and minors in fine arts and photography. |
Springer Eagles Wrap Up Successful Season
The Springer Eagles had good weather on Saturday for their participation in the CYO Division 2 City Track Championships, wrapping up their season on a positive note. Sixty-nine students were on the track team this year.
"The coaches are very happy with the team's performance this year," said coach Mark Phelps. "We saw much improvement from our first meet to the last. Everyone gave their best effort, despite the rain at times."
At the CYO Championships, the team had an individual champion for the long jump, and runners-up for the shot put and 200 meter relay. The 5th and 6th grade boys team finished 3rd overall, and brought home a team trophy.
Springer thanks track coaches Mark Phelps, Cari Kelly, Kristy Ilg and Kristina Williams for guiding our students to a great season!

Springer Students to Paint Pig for the Big Gig
Springer students collaborated to create a winning design for the upcoming Big Pig Gig. Students drew pictures of places they like to go in Cincinnati, in the artistic style of Dr. Seuss. Instructional Assistant Cathleen Mahin combined an element of each student's design into a composite that was submitted to the Big Pig Gig.
The students' design was selected for display during the Big Pig Gig this summer. Ms. Mahin and the students are currently painting the pig.
After the Gig, Springer's pig will return home to take up residence in the building. Springer's involvement was generously sponsored by Paul and Maureen Lechleiter.
