| Intermediate Students Stage a Seussical Musical
Intermediate students are working with Norita Aplin Musician in Residence John Bromels to create a musical theater production based on Seussical, The Musical. John is an actor, singer, director and teacher, and also an accomplished playwright, whose work has been produced up and down the east coast. He is the recipient of two Kennedy Center medals and currently works as Grants and Stewardship Manager for Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park.

John is not new to Springer. He has taught drama classes with the After School program, and has worked with Upper School students in music as part of their musical theater unit.
The students' musical production will be presented as part of our Winter Holiday Assembly on the morning of December 20. John's visit is made possible through a fund established in honor of Dr. Norita Aplin, for her 14 years of leadership at Springer.

Be Our Guest Day
In November, Springer students hosted a special guest or two on Be Our Guest Day. Grandparents or other family or friends joined their student in a craft and then took a tour of the learning aids and activities available in the student's classroom. See more photos of Be Our Guest Day. |
"I read it, but I don't know what it said!" Reading comprehension is a complex process, and some students struggle to make meaning out of what they read. Springer's professional development program Reading Comprehension equips teachers with research-based strategies that can help students retain what they read. Participants will explore the components of language, learn to assess comprehension in their students and have hands-on practice time with strategies they can take back to their classrooms.
Reading Comprehension Professional Development Opportunity Friday, February 3, 2012 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Register now! |
| Wishing You a Warm December
Springer students are collecting gently used coats and new scarves, hats, gloves and mittens this week. Sponsored by Student Council, "Wishing You a Warm December" has become an annual outreach for Springer, with gathered items donated to Families for Families, a local organization that supports survivors of domestic violence.
At the end of the week-long drive, a representative of Families for Families will visit to accept the donation and speak with the students about the organization's work in Cincinnati.

The Candy Land Holiday Shop
The world of Candy Land was re-created on Springer's campus in December. Springer Family Association volunteers decorated with a Candy Land theme, and prepared a well-stocked Holiday Shop where students could buy presents for family members "in secret."
Volunteers helped students to select their gifts, and then to wrap their purchases in holiday finery. See more photos of the Holiday Shop.

| Student Takes Second in CET Art Contest
Upper School student Lauren Johnson was awarded second place in the 7th and 8th grade division in CET TV's annual Create-A-Fest art contest. Her winning drawing, created in marker and shown at right, is titled "Self-Portrait."
Twenty-one Springer students entered the contest, and their artwork was displayed in CET's Central Parkway gallery. The students attended a reception in November, at which the awards were announced.
