| "Sam" Makes a Surprise Visit to Springer
The 2011-2012 school year took flight when Sam the Eagle from the Cincinnati Zoo paid a surprise visit during the first All School Assembly of the year. Sam's handler shared the eagle's story and general information about bald eagles, and Principal Jamie Williamson explained that the eagle's endurance and clear vision led to its being chosen school mascot by Springer students several years ago.

Students and staff also cooperated to create a 'feather-ful' wall mural in the school's cafeteria. Each student and staff member cut out and decorated an eagle feather with his or her name, and added it to the 'Springer Eagle' on the wall. On each feather was printed, "Springer acknowledges you with gratitude, with love, and with ultimate respect."
See more photos of Sam's visit, and check out other photo galleries for 2011-12.

Putting the Brakes on Morning Mania

As students settle into a new school year, morning often remains a hectic time in the day. Evening preparations can help to defuse morning stress. Designating a specific location in the home where school items are gathered the night before can make mornings go more smoothly. And try to anticipate decisions that will arise in the morning and address them the evening before. |
| SPA Name Change Reflects Broadened Scope
Springer's parent association has announced a change to a new and more inclusive name - one that better reflects the involvement of grandparents, uncles, aunts and others in the mission of the Association. The Springer Family Association (SFA) retains its focus on supporting Springer students and staff by facilitating partnership, communication, parent education and cooperation among the entire school community.
The SFA Executive Board for the 2011-12 school year includes President Betsy Ayres, VP for Fundraising Shannon Plymire, VP for School Programs Holly Reilmann, Treasurer Tom Welch and Secretary Julie Morrow. Parents at Large are Kelly Jones, Margie Nordlund, Kim Addington and Laura Limardi.

Upper School Laptop Program
In a program designed to reinforce executive function skills, each Upper School student has been assigned an Apple laptop for use during the school day and at home. Use of the laptops reinforces executive function skills in several ways. Storing information in files and folders helps students learn to organize information in logical ways. The computers are equipped with software that builds skills in note-taking and helps students learn to separate main ideas from supporting information. And extensive experience with computers in school will help prepare students for the rigors of a high school curriculum. "Embedded in the program is the concept of being a responsible consumer-student," says Center Director Barbara Hunter. "Being entrusted with this quality hardware highlights the need for and the building of trust, responsibility and communication." |
For 40 years, Springer School and Center has empowered students with learning disabilities to become strategic learners. Springer offers a day school for students ages 6-13 and outreach programs and learning disability resources for students, parents and teachers in the Greater Cincinnati area.
