Greetings! Our 2011 Commencement ceremonies marked the end of the academic year for our day school students, but Springer's campus has remained active this summer.
The center has hosted area educators looking to gain important strategies for teaching reading, and students from across Greater Cincinnati got a jump on their next school year as they enjoyed Adventures in Summer Learning.
We hope you are enjoying a fun and relaxing summer!

"Before Springer...
I felt different from other kids. At Springer, I started to think differently about myself. I learned that I was smart and a great pupil. I did not erase the obstacles that I will face in the future; I broke down the barriers that obstructed my true colors. And I had fun while I was at it!" - from commencement speech of 2011 Springer graduate Carson Carroll |
Teachers Become Students at Springer's MARS Program
"I feel like a kid again - in the role of a student," says Intervention Specialist Michelle Durand of Little Miami Local School District. Fellow Intervention Specialist Dee Dee Walker adds, "(MARS Instructor) Eileen (Schroeder) is modeling what works as she teaches. She's teaching as we should, and it helps us understand the benefit to students."
Michelle and Dee Dee were two of 15 area educators who gathered at the Springer campus to take part in the center's week-long workshop on teaching reading, A Multisensory Approach to Reading Success (MARS). Another 93 educators participated in MARS programs off-site.
The program strengthens the classroom teacher's understanding of the components of linguistics, and offers hands-on guides and activities that equip educators to bring what they learn into their classrooms to affect reading outcomes for students. "The program is very user friendly," notes Dee Dee. "I'm extremely excited to take these materials back to the classroom this fall!"
Upcoming programs from Springer's center include ADHD and Executive Function: Promoting Consistent Behaviors at Home, a two-hour workshop for parents, and a Professional Development opportunity for educators, Hands-On Strategies that Activate Learning.

"Everyone was climbing, but not me...
I was falling and didn't know why. Springer caught me - with the knowledge to help me climb back up to the road to success. The teachers at Springer showed me the way and made me the person I am today. I feel great to know that I can succeed, and I can accomplish anything I put my mind to." - from commencement speech of 2011 Springer graduate Dane Franke |
| Students Travel for Summer Program

Students from as far away as Columbus attended Adventures in Summer Learning this year, some staying with grandparents to attend the two or four-week programs.
In it's 20th year, Adventures exceeded enrollment expectations, with 130 participants. "The students were enthusiastic, eager learners this year," says Program Coordinator Mary Anne Mulcahey. "One mother told me that after the first day her daughter asked to be signed up for next year's program!"
