November 2010
fall treeGreetings!

Our e-newsletter takes on a bright new look this month, reflecting the freshness of our renovated website. November also launches us into the holiday season and time spent with family and friends. But before we head for home, there is much to do at Springer. This month we welcome families to visit on Be Our Guest Day. Next month African drumming comes to Springer! We wish you and your family an enjoyable Thanksgiving.

If You Haven't Said YES...

As you consider your plans for end-of-year giving, remember that Springer School and Center's influence in Cincinnati goes far beyond the lives of enrolled students. Through the center's programs for parents and educators, thousands of students with learning disabilities are now receiving specialized attention that can help them to be successful in school. The Annual Fund is an important, immediate and direct way to help these students and their families this year.

The sounds of West African drumming will be echoing through the halls of Springer in December when we welcome Chris Tanner, the Norita Aplin Musician-in-Residence for 2010. Mr. Tanner is an associate professor of music at Miami University, and the founder and director of the Miami University Steel Band. He has studied African drumming in Ghana, and teaches a class on non-Western music at the University.

are helping me to take notes in my high school classes. Those same strategies have made it easier for me to read music, so I can be in the marching band."

Springer Students Lend a Hand

Springer students are learning first-hand the impact they can have on their worlds - both within the school and in the greater community. Upper School students are helping with Order Out Day and have been guiding Primary students as they work on an art project. order outIntermediate students assist Primary physical education classes and manage recess equipment, as well as serve as tour guides during Open House. Posters created by Primary students remind us all of the importance of following rules and keeping our school tidy.

Members of Student Council have helped out with SPA events such as the annual Bike Hike and an ice cream party. They will also be collecting canned goods at the December social, to be donated to the Walnut Hills Soup Kitchen. Activities such as these encourage students to see themselves as contributors to the world in which they live.

Supporting Students with ADHD at Home

Students with ADHD and its accompanying deficits in executive function often have difficulty getting homework turned in, planning ahead and keeping track of assignments.
