Greetings!

Commencement - a beginning.  Each year in June, we hold our Commencement ceremony.  It signifies the "beginning" of a new journey for each of our graduating students.  You can feel the excitement as students and families celebrate their hard work and dedication.    You can see the confidence reflected in the faces of the children, and the joy in each parent's.  The Springer experience; success does change everything!

Professional Development for Educators

The Springer campus was bustling with community educators during the June 14th through 18th Multisensory Approach to Reading Success (MARS) professional development course.  Teaching reading to reach ALL students was the focus of the week.  Here's what some participants had to say!

"This has been one of the best PDs that I have attended!"

"I have learned so much about teaching reading in a more effective way."

"I feel better equipped to do my job better!"

"This information will be very useful and powerful for teaching."

"The multisensory approach to learning makes sense for all learners and particularly those who learn by doing."

Celebrating Students!

Upper School student, Joel Beard, was named the 2010 Bolan Scholarship award recipient at this year's Commencement ceremony.  This award recognizes a graduating student who demonstrates an understanding of his or her learning disability, applies the strategies learned at Springer, displays a positive attitude, demonstrates leadership, and shows concern for others.  The award provides the winning graduate with a scholarship to offset future educational costs.  The scholarship is available through a fund established in 1988 in memory of Mr. Peter Bolan, a Springer alumni parent and great supporter of the school.  Congratulations to Joel and his family!

The Springer Spirit Award winners were announced at a Recognition Assembly on May 26th.  Each year, teachers are asked to choose one student in their homeroom to receive the Spirit Award.  Recipients of this award demonstrate a spirit of cooperation with adults and peers on a consistent basis, act as a good role model for other students, both socially and academically, and show pride in themselves both as learners and as individuals.  Congratulations to this year's award winners:  Welby Anning, Evan Berryman, Alexis Bullock, Anna Clements, Nicole Evers, Anna Ficker, Kathleen Finn, Joe Hill, Olivia Matt, Benny Mendelsohn, Dustin Parsons, Alicia Riley, Tate Schreiber, and Emily Toles!

An Evening with Richard Lavoie

Springer is pleased to announce that internationally renowned speaker, Richard Lavoie will be presenting an evening for parents on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010, sponsored by Springer and The Family Resource Center of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.  Rick's topic for this special event is "The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child."

Summer Learning is Fun!

On June 21st, Adventures in Summer Learning began!  Approximately 150 students are improving basic skills while having a good time in the four-week morning program and numerous afternoon classes.  Language arts, math, games & physical activities, handwriting, and social skills are areas of focus.  Adventures has been helping children become more confident learners since 1992.

End of Year Traditions

Two all-time favorite traditions of Springer students are the Autograph Party and the All School Outing.  The All School Outing is held each year at the Cincinnati Sports Mall, where students enjoy swimming, games, and some relaxation time.  The Autograph Party is during the last week of school.  After the whole school has lunch together on the piazza, students gather notes and autographs from friends and staff members, tokens of the great relationships they've had together during the year.

Oliver Gale Washington D.C. Trip

Upper School students had a fantastic time in April exploring and learning about Washington D.C.  The four-day tour was made possible by the Oliver Gale Washington Academy, established in 2008 by the William M. Gale Family Foundation in memory of Mr. Oliver Gale.  A special fund underwrites the costs for students every other year.
