Greetings!

Welcome back! It's hard to believe that a month has gone by since school started on August 20th. Students and staff are settling in to school routines and activities while getting ready for all the learning ahead. Center staff have been busy planning fall programs for parents and professional development for area teachers. Here's to another great Springer year!

Annual Fund Campaign Kicks Off!
Springer parent and Annual Fund Chair Kim Borcherding, officially announced the 2009-10 Annual Fund Campaign during the September Parent Orientation. This year's goal of $220,000 will support critical financial aid and outreach programs and will provide funding for special school programs. Making a direct and immediate impact to this year's students and programs, Springer is counting on supporters to Help Children Believe in Themselves. Together, we can make a difference. Give generously when you receive your Annual Fund mailing in October!

Exciting News! Springer School and Center is pleased to announce that Dana Buchman, fashion designer, author, and mother of a daughter with learning disabilities will be the guest speaker for A Springer Celebration! on May 5, 2010. Ms. Buchman, who has directed her own fashion label for 20 years, now designs the Dana Buchman collection, available exclusively at Kohl's stores. Along with daughter Charlotte, she has also written A Special Education, a book about their family's coming to terms with learning disabilities. Each year, Springer School and Center hosts A Springer Celebration! to increase awareness about Springer's mission and to raise funds that support financial aid and community outreach programs. Mark your calendars for a wonderful event!

Summer Visitors
During the early summer, Springer staff were excited to discover two newborn fawns in different locations on Springer's campus! Initially worried that the mother had abandoned the two newborns, staff googled for information and found  that deer mothers leave the babies alone as a defensive tactic. Because the newborns are not mobile enough to travel during the first few days, the mother trusts that their natural camouflage and lack of scent will protect them from predators. After a few days, the mother was seen with a fawn, and then they were gone - off to join the herd!  Touched by this brief but magical interlude with nature, staff are hoping that "Reuben" (named after Reuben Springer, of course!) and "Ruby" live long and robust lives!
