REMINDER:

Arlington ACMI-TV Members to receive awards
at November 15th Video Festival Ceremony
(more info at www.acm-ne.org)

Several members of Arlington Community Media Inc. (ACMI) submitted, last September 5th, video entries to the Eleventh
Annual Fall Video Festival
of the Northeast Region of the Alliance for  Community Media.  Entries from community access stations and their members came from all over the region and were judged by experts on various criteria within many categories -- from News to Documentary, and Instructional to Public Service Announcement.

The competition was very strong, and ACMI is pleased to announce that two of its members will receive awards at the November 15th ceremony in Methuen a week from this Saturday.  Carol Sardo, of East Arlington, has won third place in the PSA category for her independently produced piece entitled "My Beagles Love Bones". Chef David Sammarco won second place in the Non-Professional Instructional and Training category.

Carol explains how she came to get involved in making her award-winning PSA.

Sardo "Combining two of my passions, beagles and video, in a collaborative way has turned out to be extremely rewarding.  I have been volunteering with Beagles of New England States - BONES, a beagle rescue organization - since 2003, as a transporter and on various fundraising activities, because I wanted to learn more about the breed.  I had also been dabbling in 'mash-ups' videos, mostly for friends and colleagues.  I figured that doing a short video would be good exposure for our wonderful organization and a good learning experience for me."

"When I approached the BONES board regarding the PSA project they were nothing but supportive, as were all of the 'talent', and their amazing beagles who are the featured in the spot.  I had the chance to travel to each state to shoot, and then edited the piece on my iBook using iMovie.  The video can be seen on the BONES website www.bonesbeagles.org and on YouTube.  It is an honor to be recognized by the Alliance for Community Media, but the real satisfaction is in bringing attention to dog rescue and to BONES."

The other winning entry, submitted by ACMI as one among several of its regular programs, won second place in the Non-Professional Instructional and Training category.  ACMI submitted a segment from the popular cooking show hosted by Arlington's Chef David Sammarco, called "Just Cook It".

SammarcoChef David, a graduate of the prestigious Johnson & Wales Culinary College, has been a working chef for a long time. His family and he opened "The Little Restaurant" in Chelsea in the 1980s and on one particular day in 1986, actor Richard Crenna (of Rambo fame) came into the restaurant for a veal parm sub.  Crenna was so delighted by Sammarco's sub that he offered him a part as an extra in A Case of Deadly Force in which he was currently starring.  That exposure to big-time filmmaking is how "Just Cook It" (first called "Cable Cuisine") got its start.

Sammarco, a motorcyclist and backpacker who has his own rock band, believes in imparting in his reality-cooking show his favorite axiom: Maximum Knowledge - Minimal Equipment (M.K.M.E) and he wanted to offer his culinary teaching to as many as possible. Eventually, Cable Cuisine and then Just Cook It went out over Arlington Cable-TV to a small audience which today has grown and is quite devoted to his three-meals-in-28-minutes right-before-your eyes reality cooking show.

Arlington cableviewers may tune in to his continually updated series on RCN 3, Comcast 8, and Verizon 31.

Arlington Community Media Inc. (ACMI) congratulates Carol and Dave on their achievements, and members of the ACMI staff will be on hand to document the red-carpet moments of both of these ACMI volunteer producers on November 15th.
