May 2007 brought to Arlington Studio its first video production and editing workshops under the Studio's new management by Arlington Community Media Inc.

ACMI's Executive Director, Norman McLeod, called them "the first in what will be a regular series of workshops designed to train our members on the new digital video cameras and editing systems now being ordered to produce high-quality programming for our newly upgraded digital studio and fiber-optic network."

Many of Arlington's active volunteer producers were able to participate in two workshops offered at the Studio by local documentary producer, and ACMI board member, David Padrusch. During the first ten days in May, David offered both a basic TV production workshop and an advanced one. The workshops featured an introduction to lighting techniques used by Padrusch in his work with the History Channel.  Another highlight was training on the new high-quality DV cameras just purchased by the Studio for its  volunteer producers to use on upcoming projects.

Participant feedback was positive. Similar workshops are being planned for the fall.

In Memorium:
PaulLeone-CU  Dear Friend --

Arlington Studio has much to be thankful for as the blooms of spring grace its surroundings. In this sweet time of new beginnings, we wish also to honor the memory of a young man who has left our community and our world during the spring of his own life.

Our fondest farewell to Paul Leone, who helped us here in the Studio during the early months of our transition from Comcast to ACMI, and whose father is our community access corporation's president. We offer to John, Carla, and Laura Leone, and to their extended families, our heartfelt expressions of profound sorrow for their loss.

Memorial donations may be made in Paul Leone's name to the Arlington Boys' and Girls' Club.
Town-Wide Election Coverage
Control Room Ryan

Arlington Studio's coverage of Town-wide elections
on Saturday April 14th had something traditional and something new to offer.  The traditional part was the trusted pre-production planning and program production by Glenn Koenig, who has provided this special coverage, along with longtime on-camera host, Harry Barber, since 1986. The new part was the involvement of Arlington Studio staff members, Jeff Munro as Glenn's co-producer, Lakis Koulouris as assistant producer, and Jim Akimchuk as director and technical engineer.

The product of their combined and coordinated efforts was generally lauded by viewers.  The program featured the meticulous reporting of returns via Glenn's on-screen database while live announcing was done on a split screen that allowed simultaneous information in words and viewable statistics.  There were other overlays of information at the bottom of the screen and background music during the waiting periods.  It wasn't perfect, but it was a solid first effort in modernizing the time-tested basic cablecast that has become a staple of election night coverage.

Town Meeting 2007 began on Monday April 23rd and closed on Monday May 21st.  ACMI's Arlington Studio was there to cover the openning session and remained for all of the Monday and Wednesday evening sessions until the last warrant article has been discussed and voted upon. With improvements made to the sound system's connection to our cameras, we are able to bring to Arlington's cable-viewing residents greater sound clarity along with our improved video signal.  We hope this improved service makes it easier for our town's citizens to follow the procedings of Town Meeting.

The Patriots' Day Parade That Wasn't, but Now Is
The same crew that brought you the Town election returns live from the Town Clerk's office on April 14th, was prepped and poised to present live coverage of the scheduled Patriots' Day Parade the following afternoon.  The Town Manager decided by the end of day Saturday that weather would not permit a successful outing and a lot of scheduled participants heaved a sigh of relief.

Our own dedicated team at Arlington Studio, somewhat spent from the late evening coverage of election returns, may have felt relief as well, but they never said so, even while resting in the warm comfort of their homes on Sunday morning.

Now, as the June 2nd parade's rain date approaches, ACMI's Arlington Studio plans to be there bringing it all to your home TV set -- and only days after covering the May 28th Memorial Day Parade.  But that's okay because, as we all know, everybody loves a parade.
Our next newsletter will be emailed in August since we are converting our newsletter schedule from monthly to quarterly.  Please consider yourself hereby invited to submit your ideas and suggestions for items to be included in the Summer edition.  All feedback is welcome at any time about any aspect of our operation as your television link to our Arlington community.  Keep watching!  Keep producing!
