Penn Valley Park Skate Plaza to Expand

You may notice some construction around the skate plaza at Penn Valley Park in the coming months.  Thanks to the Rob Dyrdek Foundation and Street League Skateboarding, the skate plaza is getting an addition.

While professional skateboarder, Rob Dyrdek, was in town earlier this month for the ESPN nationally televised skateboarding championships at the Sprint Center, he, along with Mayor Sly James and Parks and Recreation Director Mark McHenry, announced the donation of approximately $50,000 worth of in-kind design work for the skate plaza at Penn Valley Park.  Street League Skateboarding is also donating the skate features from the championships to the skate plaza.  The estimated value of the Street League skate features is around $35,000.

The skate plaza at Penn Valley Park will be the Rob Dyrdek Foundation's ninth "Safe Spot Skate Spot," a program that seeks to create safe and legal havens for skaters across the country.  "I couldn't be more proud to partner with Mayor Sly James and the Department of Parks and Recreation to help build a world-class skate plaza here in Kansas City," Dyrdek told reporters at a press conference on June 8 at City Hall.

Mayor James commented, "I am so grateful to Rob and Street League for their generosity to the City of Kansas City, and skaters from across the area. Penn Valley Park has long been where Kansas City comes to celebrate, and the donation of this equipment to its skate park is one more reason why it is one of America's finest urban parks."

The skate plaza in Penn Valley Park was completed in 2006 and is approximately 11,000 square feet. Once completed, the enhanced skate plaza will be 15,000 square feet. Construction is expected to begin in September and will be completed next spring.

Catch 9 to 5: The Musical at Starlight Theatre

9 to 5: The MusicalBased on the hit 1980 movie and featuring Dolly Parton's original title song and new Tony Award® and Grammy®-nominated score, the all-new national tour of 9 to 5: The Musical punches its timecard at Starlight Theatre for six performances on June 21-26. All shows start at 8:00pm on Starlight's Jeannette and Jerome Cohen Community Stage.

A hilarious story of friendship and revenge in the Rolodex era, 9 to 5: The Musical follows three unlikely friends who conspire to take control of their company and learn there's nothing they can't do - even in a man's world! Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, 9 to 5: The Musical is about teaming up and taking care of business . . . getting credit and getting even.

The musical, which opened on Broadway in April 2009, marked the Broadway debut for seven-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter and musician Parton. The national tour then opened in September 2010 in Parton's hometown of Nashville, a fitting tribute to her significant role in the musical. "I couldn't have asked for a better experience on my first Broadway show," said Parton of her role as the production's composer and lyricist. "I couldn't wait for this show to hit the road so people across the country could see why I'm so proud of everyone involved."

The tour's outstanding comic cast is led by Broadway veterans Dee Hoty, Mamie Parris, Diana DeGarmo, Joseph Mahowald and Kristine Zbornik.

9 to 5: The Musical was nominated for four 2009 Tony Awards, including Best Original Score, and received a record-breaking 15 Drama Desk nominations, including Outstanding Musical. The show's book was written by Patricia Resnick, who co-authored the original screenplay. The touring production is directed and choreographed by Tony-nominated Jeff Calhoun, who first met Dolly Parton when he was a chorus kid dancing in her film The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

"I'm looking forward to bringing Starlight audiences a fun night under the stars with this energetic and highly entertaining production," said Denton Yockey, Starlight president and executive producer. "9 to 5's lighthearted look at female empowerment will surely convince audience members to leave their workday worries behind."

Tickets for 9 to 5: The Musical at Starlight Theatre are on sale now for $10 to $85. Tickets are available online at www.kcstarlight.com, by calling 816-363-STAR (7827) or at the Starlight box office at 4600 Starlight Road, Kansas City, MO 64132.  All performances begin at 8:00pm.

Beanstalk Children's Garden Opens for the Season

Beanstalk GardenThe Beanstalk Children's Garden recently opened for a summer and fall season chock-full of fun for children, families and school and camp groups.

Families are welcome to drop by the Beanstalk any time Kansas City Community Gardens (KCCG) is open. Teachers and summer camp coordinators will want to schedule a tour of the Beanstalk, where children can touch, taste, and smell a variety of veggies, fruits, herbs and other green growing things. The kids learn how the "Sensitive Plant" and the "Toothache Plant" and others got their weird names. They feed fish, look for insects and even take home a seedling of their own.

Call Mary Roduner at 816-931-3877 to book a guided group tour of the garden, located at KCCG's Swope Park headquarters, 6917 Kensington in Kansas City, Missouri.

Tour groups are lining up fast, but Mary says "There still is a lot of space left - a lot of time is available in July and August."

A visit to the Beanstalk is still just $2 a person ages 3 and up, but families can get in on a great deal with a Family Season Pass.  For a one-time payment of $10, families can visit as often as they would like. Every week has something different to see and taste.

Kansas City Community Gardens, located in Swope Park, is a not-for-profit organization that has provided over 30 years of self-help gardening in garden plots located in backyards, vacant lots, schoolyards and at community sites throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area. Website is www.kccg.org; phone number is 816-931-3877.

When Thunder Roars: Lightning Safety Week, June 19-25

Lightning Safety TipsWhile tornadoes and flooding may have dominated the news this spring and summer, local emergency managers encourage residents to be aware of another potentially deadly weather phenomenon - lightning.

Lightning kills an average of about 60 people each year in the United States. Summer is the peak season for lightning, and the National Weather Service recognizes June 19-25 as Lightning Safety Week. Cities and counties in the Kansas City metropolitan area are joining together  this year to help protect residents with  the installation of signs at area parks, playgrounds and ball fields with an important message: "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors!"

Lightning flashes can travel horizontally many miles away from a thunderstorm and strike the ground - sometimes appearing to come out of a clear blue sky. Any time you hear thunder, lightning is close enough to strike you. The only safe shelter is inside a substantial building or enclosed, hard-topped vehicle. Go inside and stay inside until 30 minutes after you hear the last clap of thunder.

When planning any outdoor activity, from sporting events to family picnics, be sure to check the weather forecast before you leave. Your best source for up-to-date weather information outdoors is a battery-operated NOAA all-hazards weather radio. These radios can be programmed to sound an alert when severe weather approaches your area.

Since 2002, the Metropolitan Emergency Managers Committee (MEMC) has partnered with area Price Chopper grocery stores on Project Community Alert to make weather radios available at a discounted price. Using proceeds from this campaign, MEMC recently purchased 1,000 aluminum signs featuring the "When Thunder Roars" slogan and other safety tips.

"Planning ahead for severe weather can save lives," said Capt. Mark Owen, Platte County Sheriff's Department, co-chair of the MEMC's Citizen Readiness Subcommittee. "When you arrive at a park or playground, take time to identify the nearest safe shelter. Know where you will go if a storm pops up and how much time it will take to get there."

By taking a few minutes to prepare, you can help prevent a tragedy. For more information, contact your city or county emergency manager or visit the Lightning Safety website.

City and Partners Open New Trails on National Trails Day
Two newly expanded trails were officially opened on June 4 as part of National Trails Day.

Officials from the City of Kansas City, Missouri and Platte County were on hand to cut the ribbon to open the new trailhead on Line Creek Trail. When complete, the 8.2 mile Line Creek Trail will extend from Riverside's Renner Brenner Park to Kansas City's Missouri Route 152. Since 2009, the City's Public Works Department has constructed two miles of the Line Creek Trail north and south of Northwest 68th Street and completed 0.8 miles of the Southern Platte Pass (64th Street) Trail. Line Creek Trail also features a Fixit, bicycle service station, which offers an air pump and basic repair tools to make the trail more bike-friendly.

Swope TrailsAdditionally, KC Parks and the EarthRiders Trails Association opened an additional 1.75 mile segment of single track mountain bike and hiking trails within Swope Park bringing the total to 8.5 miles. When completed, Swope Trails will be the longest urban single track trail system in the country (50 miles) connecting two of the greatest natural environments in the region - Swope Park and the Blue River. Swope Trails are located in the heart of Swope Park, Kansas City's largest urban park at 1,805 acres, and showcase the limestone bluffs connecting to trails along the Blue River, Lakeside Nature Center, Rocky Point Glades and Camp Lake of the Woods. Great strides are being made with help from the Missouri Department of Conservation to ensure trail alignments preserve, protect and restore the natural habitat of the glades.

"The opening of these two new facilities highlights the City's commitment to be more bikeable and walkable and emphasizes the need for strong partnerships with the community and neighboring jurisdictions," said Deb Ridgway, bicycle pedestrian coordinator for the City of Kansas City, Missouri.

National Trails Day is an annual event that inspires citizens nationwide to discover and celebrate trails by participating in outdoor activities, including health and wellness exhibitions and trail work projects. Trails provide opportunities to breathe fresh air, get the heart pumping, escape from daily stresses and maintain overall health.

North Face Endurance Challenge Brings Inaugural Road Event to KC

"Ultra-Marathon Man" and The North Face Global Athlete Dean Karnazes will return to Kansas City after his Run Across America, bringing The North Face Endurance Challenge along with him.

Dean Karnazes

Ultra-Marathon Man Dean Karnazes

For the past four years, The North Face Endurance Challenge has offered a unique running experience that has allowed people to push and exceed their personal limits on the trail. Hosted by Dean Karnazes, this event series starts in Bear Mountain, NY and travels to Washington, DC; Madison, WI; Atlanta, GA; and San Francisco, CA. For the first time, The North Face is pushing this experience beyond the trail, with a road event on August 27-28 that will bring the road running community in and around Kansas City the same quality event experience.

"When evaluating new markets for The North Face Endurance Challenge, trail or road, a high quality, well designed course and how enjoyable it will be for runners takes highest priority, " said Director of Sports Marketing for The North Face, Katie Ramage. "Once that is assured, we go on to measure the destination on a variety of other criteria including does the market want another event.  Having local community support and enthusiasm from the running community has been key to our decision to come to Kansas City, Missouri this August."

Following a two-day format similar to other Endurance Challenge events, the road event will feature a Marathon, Marathon Relay and 50K distances on Saturday, and a 5K, 10K and Half Marathon distances on Sunday. Parents can also bring their kids for the daily 1K Karno Kid's Races, led by Dean himself.

The Kansas City event starts and finishes in the beautiful Frank A. Theis Park  just a few blocks from The North Face store in Country Club Plaza.  Runners will wind through the Plaza and Downtown, along the Missouri River and back towards Theis Park on a rolling and scenic course.

On June 25, Dean will be coming to Kansas City to meet local runners and challenge them to get outdoors and get healthy this summer.  Join Dean at 10:00am for a fun run starting from The North Face retail store in Country Club Plaza and then walk over to Neptune Courtyard to hear about his recent "Run Across America" which he finished this past May in New York City.  There will be live music and food available from 10:30am - 1:00pm. This is a great opportunity for the running community of Kansas to get together and celebrate their love of putting one foot in front of the other and meet a man who has more than a few "tales from the road" to share.  Dean will be available to sign copies of his new bestselling book, "RUN! 26.2 Stories of Blister and Bliss".

Parks Spotlight: Loose Flagpole

HISTORY

Loose FlagpoleIn November 1912, Jacob Loose, Chairman of the Board of the Loose-Wiles Biscuit Company and local philanthropist, appeared before the Board of Park Commissioners and offered to erect a flagpole in Swope Park "as a memorial to Thomas H. Swope."   The Park Board approved the proposal in January 1913.  The first location discussed was "in the center of the circle between the roadways east of the main entrance to Swope Park."

Mr. Loose worked with the companies needed to create the flagpole including the pole itself, the marble base, and plaques to place on the base.  He was in contact with Landscape Architect George Kessler to discuss progress of the project and possible locations for the flagpole. It was necessary that all plans be approved by the Board of Park Commissioners and George Kessler.   The final location was not chosen until late May 1915.

From the early days of planning, the height of 200 feet was mentioned.  This is a very tall flagpole (the average in ground flagpole runs about 15 feet for homes and 20 - 30 feet for most businesses).  Making it even more unusual was that part of the plan was also to make such a tall pole "unguyed" which means no stabilizing wires attaching the very tall flagpole to the ground.

The flagpole's dedication occurred on July 5, 1915 with an estimated crowd of 90,000 people at the ceremony.  The 200 foot tall pole was topped by a copper eagle weather vane.  Four brass plaques were placed on the marble base.  One told of the presentation to Swope Park, Jacob Loose's name and the date; on another was the Gettysburg Address; the third had the words of "The Star Spangled Banner"; and the fourth showed a portion of the Declaration of Independence.  The flagpole was not officially named for Jacob Loose but over the years acquired the name of "Loose Flagpole" or "Loose Memorial Flagpole" to honor the great gift of Mr. Loose.

A strong wind blew the eagle off its perch two weeks after the dedication and it was placed back on top of the pole.  A copper ball replaced the eagle in 1919 after a storm broke off the top 15 feet of the pole.   A weathervane was later put on top.  In 1931, a small plane crashed into the flagpole in bad weather and when repairs were made, the height of the pole was reduced to 175 feet.

In 2010 the flagpole underwent repair work, and was cleaned and painted by steeplejack Jim Phelan. The original plaques, which disappeared in the early 1980s, have been recreated and will be dedicated at 12 Noon on July 9, 2011, as part of the Party in the Park celebration of National Parks and Recreation Month.
