KC Parks Named Finalists for National Award
KC Parks recently received recognition as a National Gold Medal Award finalist by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA) and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Kansas City, Missouri's Parks and Recreation Department was one of only four communities to receive this designation within the "Class I" category, which included all U.S. parks and recreation departments serving populations of 250,000 or more.
"We are proud to be named a finalist for this very prestigious award," said John Fierro, president of the Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners. "It's exciting for all of us to be considered one of the top parks and recreation agencies in the nation. I particularly want to acknowledge our outstanding staff and dedicated volunteers for their efforts to help our department earn this recognition."
According to the NRPA, the Gold Medal Awards program honors U.S. communities that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.
The Gold Medals Awards program separates award candidates into five categories, based on community population. Four finalists are chosen from each category. This year's finalists will compete for the Grand Plaque Award honors this summer, which will be announced during the NRPA's Annual Congress & Exposition in Atlanta, Georgia, November 1-3, 2011.
The other Class I finalists included Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Parks and Recreation Department; Miami-Dade County, Florida Park and Recreation Department; and Portland, Oregon Parks and Recreation.

Arbor Day Tree Planting Honors "Addie" Ward
| |
Adelaide "Addie" Cobb Ward and Family. |
KC Parks and the Garden Center Association celebrated Arbor Day on April 30 as a Babylon Weeping Willow was planted in Loose Park's Stanley R. McLane Arboretum in honor of Adelaide "Addie" Cobb Ward.
Addie Ward is native of Ohio and received her undergraduate degree from Briarcliff College. Her late husband, Lewis L. Ward, was the president and CEO of Russell Stover Candies, Inc. A long time supporter of the arts, Mrs. Ward currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and chairs the museum's Committee on the Collections. In 1997, she endowed the Louis L. and Adelaide C. Ward Curator of European Painting and Sculpture at the Nelson. In 2007, the Adelaide C. Ward Sculpture Hall was created.
Throughout her life, Addie has volunteered for many organizations including the Junior League of Kansas City, the Children's Center for the Visually Impaired and the Children's Relief Association. She actively supports the Salvation Army, Harvesters and City Union Mission. She is also a founding member of the Jacob L. and Ella C. Loose Foundation.
Addie's involvement with Loose Park has sparked a large interest in the planting of a vast number of trees in the Stanley R. McLane Arboretum which solidifies the continuation and growth of the urban forest in one of Kansas City's premier parks.
In addition to the tree planting ceremony, Kansas City, Missouri received continuation of its Tree City USA designation from the Missouri Department of Conservation. Kansas City has held the designation Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation since 1988. To become a Tree City USA community, a city must meet four standards: have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation. Tree City USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit, environmental educational organization of nearly one million members, with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. A city must meet four standards to become a Tree City USA community: have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a comprehensive forestry program, and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Healthy Vending Encouraged in Parks
Currently, 31% of Missouri children are considered obese and our state ranks as the 9th heaviest in the country. In an effort to counter the growing obesity epidemic afflicting both children and adults and boost access to healthier food and beverage alternatives in our parks, KC Parks has a Healthy Vending program that creatively encourages healthier eating habits while enjoying our park amenities.
The Healthy Vending policy encourages food/beverage vendors to offer healthier snack choices by providing discounts/incentives based upon the percentage of healthy items offered for sale in authorized parks.
"Healthier" Food Vendors receive a 50% reduction in the cost of a Vending Permit and are required to have 50% of their items adhere to specific nutrition guidelines. "Healthiest" Food Vendors receive a roaming Vending Permit allowing them to vend in three parks for the price of one. They are required to have 75% of their items adhere to specific nutrition guidelines. Healthy vendors are monitored to assure full compliance of rules and regulations, as well as ensure healthier items are on-hand and meet the stipulated nutrition guidelines.
For all the details regarding food/beverage vending in KCMO parks, download the Parks and Recreation Department's Vending Policy. |

Parks Spotlight: The Grove
History The 1893 plan for parks and boulevards proposed a park called "Walnut Grove" at 15th Street, Walrond Avenue (now Benton Boulevard):
"It is ... sufficient to serve not only for children's play, but may be made a pleasure-ground of considerable
beauty. The ground is already well wooded. Its improvements would be simple in form; including walks,
arranged to lead through shady groves, and possibly some interesting plantation of flowering shrubs around
the borders of the property..."
Property for "The Grove" was purchased in 1898. The park's first use was as more as a "beauty spot" with no amenities. Small early additions were playground equipment and a croquet court. In 1911 landscape architect George Kessler prepared a plan for the park. A wading pool was constructed in what had been an old creek channel and became very popular with children.
The "jewel" of Budd Park for many years was the bathhouse (pictured) which opened in 1914. The design, by local architects Wight and Wight, was evocative of a Roman bathhouse with its grand and classic design which was in the mode of the City Beautiful movement popular at the time. From the Park System of Kansas City Souvenir 1920:
This bath house has a triple use-all year, 24 hour comfort stations; all year, 12 hour shower bath service; and an open air swimming pool for summer use, all for use for both sexes. It has an administration office; two waiting rooms, one women's rest room with seven lockers and four electric hair dryers; three individual showers, one general shower room with ten showers and tub bath for men; one general shower room with eight showers for boys; nine individual showers, one general shower room with two showers and two tub baths for women; open air swimming pool, 35 by 90 feet, with entrance room of 48 feet of showers, and 132 lockers; one comfort station for men and one for women. A fee of two cents for towel, two cents for soap and ten cents for suit is made.
While there were other bathhouses administered by the Park Department at that time such as at The Parade and Holmes Square Park, the one at the Grove was larger and more elaborate than the others. Popular for many years, the structure was eventually abandoned and then torn down in 1964.
The Grove and other small parks in various neighborhoods throughout the city were considered very important components of the park plan of Kansas City. They offered activities and playgrounds within walking distance of residential areas. The Grove was also easily accessible by trolley car on the 15th Street railway. Other activities at The Grove included tennis, horseshoe pitching, swimming, baseball and volleyball.
Amenities Recent developments at The Grove include a new shelter with solar lighting, additional picnic tables and benches, a drinking fountain and a sidewalk/trail that is ADA accessible. Plans are being made now for restrooms and an addition to the trail so that it will connect Benton Plaza and Truman Road.
Location Benton Boulevard & Truman Road; 11.33 acres |
