Celebrate the $400,000 renovation of the Laura Conyers Smith Municipal Rose Garden in Loose Park on Sunday, June 7. The public can view award-winning roses in the Garden Center from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. The official Rose Day ceremony begins at 3:00 pm with featured speaker Jonathan Kemper of the William T. Kemper Foundation which helped underwrite the renovation project. The Kansas City Youth Ballet will be on hand to dance and The Bon Ton Four will play the rediscovered 1901 song, "Rose of Kansas City Waltz". Building a Healthier Heartland Initiative brings a Farmers Market to downtown Kansas City every Thursday from June 11 through October 1. Located in beautiful Ilus Davis Park, just north of City Hall (9th and Oak Street), this partnership between the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation, will bring fresh, local produce and goods, right into the heart of the city. 5th Annual Dragon Boat Festival

Come celebrate the traditions of the East at the 5th annual Dragon Boat Festival along Brush Creek and Ward Parkway on the Country Club Plaza. The festival will feature hands-on art activities for the kids, live music, traditional Chinese dance, food, and dragon boat races along Brush Creek. The festival will begin at 10:00 am. At 1:15 pm, the waking of the dragon ceremony will take place which summons the official start of the boat races. That evening at approximately 9:00 pm, Chinese wishing lanterns will be launched in Brush Creek, for a beautiful display on a summer evening, come make a wish! This traditional Chinese holiday is celebrated as a FREE, all ages, family fun event. Heart of America Shakespeare Festival: The Merry Wives of Windsor

FREE THEATER, YES YOU READ IT RIGHT, FREE THEATER!
In partnership, the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, the Missouri Arts Council and Kansas City, Missouri Parks and Recreation, will again bring theater to the park this summer. Southmoreland Park (Emanuel Cleaver Boulevard and Oak Street) plays host to the festival and this year's production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. The show runs Tuesday through Sunday evenings, with gates opening at 6:00 pm (no shows June 22 and July 4). Pre-entertainment and food vendors will be on hand to start your evening off right, the show begins at 8:00 pm. National Trails Day 2008 will be observed on Saturday, June 6, bringing together outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds to celebrate the great natural heritage of the United States trail system.
Location: Indian Creek Trail (99th and Holmes) Date/Time: Saturday, June 6, 9:00 am Contact: 816-513-7527 Description: Walk the Indian Creek Trail 1.5 miles to State Line, meeting for refreshments at Watts Mill. Local fitness and health vendors will be on site for demonstrations and giveaways. Groups will walk back around 10:30 a.m. (Vans will be available for those who cannot walk back). Dogs on leash are welcome. This free event is jointly sponsored by Leawood and KCMO Parks and Recreation. | |
