PRESIDENT'S ARTICLE

- Deann Patena, Blue Chip Casino Hotel & Spa

Deann Patena 2

Fall has quickly approached us. A period where we start looking forward to the change in cooler weather, the beautiful color of the leaves, and of course Football!  I hope you are all noticing the changes we are making for you, our members.  We just completed a very successful fall program and joint golf outing.  This was the first time we tried an education and social event together.  Everyone enjoyed both events and it made for a great day.  Thank you to Betsy Dukes, Golf Committee Chair, Carrie Fulbright, Education Committee Chair, and their hard working committees for challenging themselves to take on and plan this new event!  Thank you also to our sponsors for your continuous support.  We could not do it with all of you!

You will continue to see changes throughout the year, but some great events will remain constant, including Cross Connect on November 10 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West--a partnership between IMPI and ISAE.  Watch for the registration to this fabulous event that offers a full day of education and networking with your industry partners.

Continue to watch for exciting information regarding our Fall Social Event and don't miss the October 21 program at the Crowne Plaza Indianapolis Airport.

As always I am interested in what you have to say.  We are hosting focus groups after our monthly programs and would enjoy hearing your point of view regarding IMPI and your membership.  Please let me know if you're interested in participating by contacting me.

MY IMPI STORY

Jaime Smith2010 was to be "the year of the party" marked by the 30th birthday I would be celebrating in August. Fortunately, it has also turned out to be the "year of accomplishments."

After 91/2 years at the Indiana Youth Institute working for the best boss in the world who was not only a role model and like a second father to me, I came in on a Monday in May to find out that he was taking another job outside of IYI. After devastation hit me like a ton of bricks, the show had to go on and "go on" it did. I accepted a promotion and am now the Director of Operations, leading a team in the business department, managing the IT needs as well as vendor relations, and of course still maintaining my role in logistics and managing the Kids Count in Indiana Conference for 1600 Indiana youth workers.

Co-chairing my second IMPI Annual Awards Night in June, with the highly talented Emilie Perkins, CMP, I was not only nominated for the second time, but I won the 2009-2010 Planner of the Year Award. Receiving my five year member pin reminded me of how quickly time flies--when you're having fun and learning so much. Having fun was reinforced with the Alice in Wonderland theme and of course, how can we forget the Queen of Hearts.

July brought even more excitement when I was awarded the July Shining Star at the IMPI luncheon. The month ended with the ever famous nail-biting CMP test, but honestly, waiting on the letter was just as tough as the preparation and the actual 3.5 hours spent answering the questions. It wouldn't be the "year of accomplishments" if I couldn't inform you that I passed the CMP!!!

I feel very fortunate to be a member of MPI and closely involved with the Indiana Chapter. Even though I started with the bigger events, attending the North America PEC in North Carolina and other major conferences before ever attending an IMPI luncheon, I'm happy to inform that the luncheons and the committees that I've been involved with have been the richest opportunities to increase my knowledge, network, and happiness in the industry. Yes, going to new places, and meeting new friends and contacts outside the state are priceless. However, putting yourself out there with those individuals local and closest to you here in Indiana, working with them on committees, and seeing them at luncheons, are truly what makes this association so great. And getting involved is all you have to do. Reach out and they will be there to bring you in. I did so with the Membership Committee two years ago and look forward to many new opportunities ahead of me.

The year isn't over so neither are the "parties" nor, hopefully, the accomplishments. I will be co-chairing the 2011 Awards Ceremony for a third time (three is my favorite number), but this time with Courtney Shafer, which I'm sure will be another "wonder"-ful time. Look out 2011... Jaime Theresa Smith, CMP, is leaving a foot print.

I challenge you all to get more involved and share your IMPI story with us -just email Stephanie Suddeth if interested.

CrossConnect logo

IMPI & ISAE have pooled resources and are holding our 4th Annual CrossConnect event on November 10, 2010 at the Wyndham Indianapolis West. This is the premier event for association, hotel, and other meeting professionals...you can't miss this opportunity!
CrossConnect is designed for all levels of professional looking to gain knowledge. The keynote speakers and breakout sessions are designed to address issues vital to meeting planners, anyone working with association and in the hospitality industry!

Below is information about the two keynotes to be held during this year's event.

Robin Crow
With resource shortages, financial uncertainty, and global hyper-competition in full swing, it's a big, scary world out there. Business is changing every day, and those changes are coming faster and faster. That's why entrepreneurs and business leaders who best adapt to those changes are the ones who will win the biggest. Going forward we must adapt to those changes because creating more efficient business systems will become the Holy Grail of professional success. In this keynote (based on his new book Evolve or Die) Robin will show you how these problems are actually huge opportunities and he'll share solid examples of companies that have successfully reinvented themselves by adapting to ongoing events as they occur. Also in this presentation Robin Crow will present his Seven Step Challenge, which will serve as a powerful tool to revitalize your business.

Hazel Walker
Everyone says they are networking, but most often they are face to face cold calling. How many times have you found yourself in a room full of people and before the end of the evening you have been pitched products and services, bored to death by the person who wants to tell you everything about their business, given business cards of people you don't know, and gone to one to one meetings only to have the other person tell you all about themselves and never asking about you? It does not have to be this way. There are 10 commandments to good networking and a system to generate referrals.
At the conclusion of this program you will:
Understand what Not to do when you are at a networking event.
Know the difference between Networking and working your Network.
Understand WHY you are networking.

MPI MESSAGING FEATURE
MPI now offers messaging on the mpiweb.org member community. The feature, similar to LinkedIn, adds value to the online experience through enabling communication between members, connections to groups and discussions.

Notes:
  • The member community at MPIweb.org allows members to increase their network, engage in discussions and join groups in a safe and professional environment
  • The communication tool allows members to send and receive messages and updates from comments and discussions
  • All messages sent and received will arrive and be stored in the user's community inbox
  • Users will need to update their profiles as well as notification settings on their MPI Community page to control frequency of notification
  • The message system is based on one used by LinkedIn, the preferred social media tool for business professionals

SPEAKER FEATURE
CJ McClanahanThis month, we're featuring an article from October's luncheon speaker, CJ McClanahan. Be sure to register for the luncheon to hear his presentation "How to do more with Less Time and Resources." For more information on CJ, click here.

I just came from a speaking engagement on the topic of personal productivity.
Each time I speak on this topic I discuss the importance of eliminating interruptions from your day.  The interruptions I reference to include email, the "do you have a second?" knocks on your door and phone calls.

As always, someone raised their hand and asked the following question - "What do I do about the client who always expects an immediate response"? This person went on to describe a client who expects an immediate response from an email and when they don't get it, they call, and if this individual doesn't answer their client will send them an urgent text message.

I responded the way I always do with an empathetic - "You set the expectation with your client that you are available at their beck and call."

Frustrated, they quickly inform me that they don't want to respond so quickly but they have no choice.

As with everything, we always have a choice.

We all have the client who wants us to drop everything when they need our assistance. You need to do a better job of setting their expectations.  For example, I advised this individual to inform all of her clients that she only responds to emails and calls during certain times of the day.

I promise you won't lose all your clients.  In fact, I would almost guarantee that they will respect the way in which you manage your day.

Remember, your time is extremely valuable.  Treat it like gold.

TEACHERS' TREASURES

Teachers Treasures

"The cost of educating a child is immense.  The cost of not educating a child is incalculable!"

The Community Outreach and Green Committees of IMPI conducted a supply drive the past three months for Teachers' Treasures.  Teachers' Treasures operates a retail-like store with more than 300 items a classroom teacher can use. These items can help capture a child's interest, creativity and commitment to learning.  They serve 234 schools - public, parochial and charter schools - kindergarten through 12th grade, across Central Indiana, with 40% or more of the student population on the free or reduced lunch program. That's over 100,000 qualified school children. Every school district in Marion County has at least two schools that qualify for our services. In the IPS school district 100% of the schools qualify.

IMPI collected 15 bags and three boxes full of miscellaneous school supplies like pens, rulers, markers, paper clips, paper, etc.    They also received banners, name tags, and tote bags to donate to the organization.    Barbara Pecina, Executive Director of Teachers' Treasures, who was recently a guest speaker at IMPI luncheon, could not believe the support and donations of IMPI.    "We are so very grateful to the IMPI organization for all of the wonderful supplies.  It is through caring of individuals like you that Teachers' Treasures has been able to help the children of Marion County.  Thank you for all your effort, and your committees', to make this supply drive so successful."
Please visit Teachers' Treasures for more information about how you can help a great cause.
