Women Unite to Build Affordable Housing on May 8
Women Build 09It's that time of year when we honor the important women in our lives with breakfast in bed, fragrant flowers and sentimental cards.
 
This Mother's Day Weekend, make the holiday extra special by joining our Women Build on Saturday, May 8. Honor of your mom, grandma, aunt or another special woman in you life by building a home for a low-income family.


Women Build 2010 will be in the South Bronx, where we are finishing the interiors of 14 Habitat-NYC homes within a 63-unit multifamily building. All-women volunteers will pound, lug, raise raise walls, learn new skills, make new friends and help transform a family's life!

No experience needed: Our fabulous site leaders will train you and have you feeling like a construction pro in no time.
 
Women Build volunteers are asked to raise a minimum of $500, which helps cover the cost of the Women Build home. Fundraising is easy with our online "Friends Asking Friends" service.

That's the everyday reality for our family partners, many of whom are single moms.
 
We love moms! And to honor mothers this Mother's Day, we invite all of our friends to share something about your mom (or other important woman in your life) . . . a happy memory . . . a funny story . . . a Mother's Day greeting!

Women Empower Each Other
Shauna Long volunteered with her own mother, Carol Long, for our 2009 Women Build. As a Habitat-NYC Board Member, Shauna knows the impact and sense of accomplishment that comes with the event.
 
Shauna especially enjoys Women Build because "Women empower each other and recognize and celebrate the amazing things that we do.

Shauna said she also was inspired by the struggle her mother faced. "I was raised by a single mom who triumphed against all odds to raise two kids on her own with no support system, no relatives and no Habitat for Humanity.
 
"My mom raised us to believe that we could be anything, no matter where we came from, but that hard work was always part of the formula. The key to her very special message of life was to give back."
