All In

Dear Bronco Friends and Family,

We have a saying around here that I like to use. It goes something like this.... "Many Hands Make Light Work." The reason I often state this to our faculty, centers around my desire for them to recognize that the power of 190 faculty members, working in unison towards a common mission to be the best, eventually will lead to this campus successes beyond our wildest imaginations. For those counting, let's look at our current enrollment.  As of today, our student body is at 3,007.  Many parents or outsiders to McKinney might look at that number and wonder just how it is that a campus that large can function and deliver the quality of education needed in order for any child to be successful. The answer is simple, our teachers are "ALL IN."  Meaning, they have taken a vow to make this school, the very best it can be and to approach this job as a blessing that they partake in daily.

So, what is your point, you may be asking? IF many hands make light work, imagine just how successful our school might be if YOU, meaning the individual reading this, were actively participants in one of our many booster clubs, or PTO? The way I see it, a 3,007 student population easily represents over 6,000 parent/guardians that can greatly affect the power of this campus to make a positive difference this year, not only for Boyd, but for the entire city as well.

The bottom line is, I believe this school is special and has so much potential. This community needs us to be successful in providing young leaders for tomorrow and we aim to do that. We also believe our actions speak louder than any words. Therefore, I sincerely ask those of you out there reading this to get involved this year. It doesn't matter how, when, or in what capacity....just get involved. Our teachers are all in, this principal is all in, and we need you. If you are unsure of how to get involved, please email me at rmcdaniel@mckinneyisd.net and I'll be glad to direct you.

Until next week everyone, thanks for an awesome first two weeks of school. I couldn't have asked for a better beginning. See you around.

With high regards,

Rick McDaniel

New Exemption Policy

After much deliberation and a thorough evaluation of our philosophy, expectations and instructional beliefs,  the decision has been made in our district to move away from the practice of exam exemptions for all grade levels.   Starting with this school year all students 9th-12th grade will be expected to take their semester exams in both the fall and spring.  Research has shown that student progress is best measured with ongoing and relative assessments throughout the school year. Our assessment practices in MISD are intended to measure academic progress and to allow us to have a living, breathing curriculum that is flexible to student needs.  Thank you in advance for your understanding and support of this new final exam schedule.

McKinney Academic Vocabulary (MAV)

As we begin the 2012-2013 school year, we would like to make you aware of a wonderful new vocabulary initiative known as MAV (McKinney Academic Vocabulary).  This is a district-wide initiative and will be implemented on all three MISD high school campuses.  The goal of the initiative is to teach students 10 PSAT/SAT vocabulary words every three weeks and for students to retain those words as they progress through the school year.  These words will be introduced through the English classes and supported by teachers from all other fields of study.  Staff and students will be using these words on a daily basis all over the campus.  Students will be tested each six-weeks over 20 words coming from the two most previous lists.  The same 10 words will be used by all four grade levels at all three campuses.  By the end of this school year, students will have mastered 120 PSAT/SAT vocabulary words.  Each year a new group of words will be introduced.  Therefore, for a student entering the 9th grade, by the time they graduate from an MISD high school, they will have mastered 480 words.  This will greatly benefit them no matter what field of study they pursue in college or what line of work they choose to go into.  We ask that you support us in promoting these words at home.  With a true community effort, all of our students at Boyd will dramatically increase their vocabulary which will ultimately enhance their quality of life.

Community Notes

Mane Gait

WANTED: Volunteers who like to horse around! Want to be a part of a caring community that helps support special needs children and adults? ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is offering Volunteer Training on Saturday, September 8, 2012 for new volunteers. The fall session begins on September 11th and ends on December 1st. Details on the program, and how you can help, are in the attached volunteer training invitation. The minimum age is 14 and it is not necessary to have prior horse experience.

ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is a center where people with disabilities can come for the purpose of improving their quality of life. Volunteers are needed to team with the riders, horses, staff and fellow volunteers to help riders improve their physical and social skills.

Would like to give back to the community, but can't commit to a full session? ManeGait is also in need of help with their annual fundraiser - the 5th Annual Gala at the 'Gait, from September 25th through September 30th.   Help preparing the grounds and re-setting the facilities helps us raise much needed funds to provide these invaluable services. Afternoon shifts are available on weekdays, and we need many volunteers - especially those with strong backs - to help during tear-down on Sunday, September 30th. If interested, please access the Gala at the 'Gait, ManeGait Gala at the 'Gait 2012 - Vol. InviteVolunteer Invitation for more details and to sign-up.

This is a wonderful way for students to earn their community service hours and a great opportunity for anyone to improve the lives of others.
