From the Principals desk ...
Dear Bronco Family and Friends,
What a beautifully executed beginning to the school year we have just experienced. For those that have heard me utilize this analogy in the past, I apologize. I have often referred to the opening of the school year to a pilot getting a plane off the ground. All engines were running at full speed last week as our wonderful faculty and staff prepared for another exciting year. This week we experienced lift off and welcomed our Broncos back to school with open arms. I have to admit, every year seems to get a little smoother than the last, and this year was certainly no exception. All that is left now is to reach cruising altitude, and my experience tells me that generally occurs at about week number three. For all of the many parent volunteers and community members that have been a part of this beginning please know that your efforts are deeply appreciated.
This week is always special. We are continuing an already successful Volleyball season in hopes of making another trip this year to the state championship match. To top it all off, we have our first pep rally of the year this Friday and that always brings our student body together. Tonight, we face Mesquite Horn in our opening football game at Ron Poe stadium. I am looking forward, with great anticipation, to what I know is going to be another great season of Bronco football.
So, as we continue to move full speed ahead, we hope everyone is as excited about this school year as we all are. Looking forward to another successful year at the home of the Broncos! Hope to see you all tonight. GO BRONCOS!!
R. McDaniel,
principal

McKinney Academic Vocabulary (MAV)
As we begin the 2012-2013 school year, we would like to make you aware of a wonderful new vocabulary initiative known as MAV (McKinney Academic Vocabulary). This is a district-wide initiative and will be implemented on all three MISD high school campuses. The goal of the initiative is to teach students 10 PSAT/SAT vocabulary words every three weeks and for students to retain those words as they progress through the school year. These words will be introduced through the English classes and supported by teachers from all other fields of study. Staff and students will be using these words on a daily basis all over the campus. Students will be tested each six-weeks over 20 words coming from the two most previous lists. The same 10 words will be used by all four grade levels at all three campuses. By the end of this school year, students will have mastered 120 PSAT/SAT vocabulary words. Each year a new group of words will be introduced. Therefore, for a student entering the 9th grade, by the time they graduate from an MISD high school, they will have mastered 480 words. This will greatly benefit them no matter what field of study they pursue in college or what line of work they choose to go into. We ask that you support us in promoting these words at home. With a true community effort, all of our students at Boyd will dramatically increase their vocabulary which will ultimately enhance their quality of life.

Community Notes
Mane Gait
WANTED: Volunteers who like to horse around! Want to be a part of a caring community that helps support special needs children and adults? ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is offering Volunteer Training on Saturday, September 8, 2012 for new volunteers. The fall session begins on September 11th and ends on December 1st. Details on the program, and how you can help, are in the attached volunteer training invitation. The minimum age is 14 and it is not necessary to have prior horse experience.
ManeGait Therapeutic Horsemanship is a center where people with disabilities can come for the purpose of improving their quality of life. Volunteers are needed to team with the riders, horses, staff and fellow volunteers to help riders improve their physical and social skills.
Would like to give back to the community, but can't commit to a full session? ManeGait is also in need of help with their annual fundraiser - the 5th Annual Gala at the 'Gait, from September 25th through September 30th. Help preparing the grounds and re-setting the facilities helps us raise much needed funds to provide these invaluable services. Afternoon shifts are available on weekdays, and we need many volunteers - especially those with strong backs - to help during tear-down on Sunday, September 30th. If interested, please access the Gala at the 'Gait, ManeGait Gala at the 'Gait 2012 - Vol. InviteVolunteer Invitation for more details and to sign-up.
This is a wonderful way for students to earn their community service hours and a great opportunity for anyone to improve the lives of others.
