Greetings!
Summer is here and with it comes a more relaxed approach to life and business. Despite the heat and humidity, people seem to have more energy to spend on their business and more time to enjoy the concerts of summer. If you don't, read on. |
I Just Don't Have The Time |
When I am talking to business owners about new strategies to grow their business, whether marketing or training or procedures or dealing with customers, the comment I most often hear is: "I just don't have the time." What I hear inside my head is: "I don't have the time to do it right, but I'll make the time to fix the problem when it occurs or live with the consequences." If someone were to say that out loud you would probably wonder about their management abilities and motivation. Sometimes they don't say it but their behavior shows it. We see it every day in customer "service." I would point to BP's actions in the Gulf as a current example.
The truth is that we can't find the time to fix problems or make the time to do it right in the first place. Time can't be controlled or managed, it passes despite our desires or intentions. What we can control, what we can manage, is our priorities and our actions. That's what management is all about: setting goals and objectives, creating plans, and then executing those plans within an established schedule. Simple, not easy.
Execution is the biggest challenge because that's when all those distractions arise - the phone calls, the small fires, the people who can't seem to do what they promised, or the tempting invitations to do something more fun than work - all conspiring to steal your time. The easiest way to respond to those challenges is to focus on what you need to do and simply say: "I just don't have the time." Try it. |
Focus on Sales
|
Have you ever been at a concert when the band performed one of their classic songs and everyone in the audience sang along? How did that feel? It happened to me the other night at Ravinia and the word "resonance" came to mind. Not only did the music resonate with the crowd, it seemed like they were remembering what they were feeling when they heard that song years ago. They were enjoyed sharing that experience collectively. A similar thing happens with Alzheimer patients. They remember and enjoy singing songs they learned years ago.
What does this have to do with sales? Music is a common language tied to emotion, but it isn't the only thing tied to emotion. Imagine how your customers would feel if you could create an experience that resonated with them. When you can find that common ground, that shared emotional experience, the barriers between people seem to evaporate and the conversation flows. You don't have to be singing the same song, just feeling the same emotions. |
Networking Tips | I recently heard that over 99% of our actions are based on fear. In networking that's definitely true. We still tell kids not to talk to strangers and you probably took the message to heart when your parents told you. What's worth remembering, though, is that the fear that affects you is very similar to the fear that affects the person you are about to meet. If you can quickly find common ground, shared experience, that fear will quickly dissipate and you will be able to enjoy meeting each other. |
