Determining if you have a Limited Slip or Open Differential and what Gear Ratio you have is thankfully a simple operation. To keep you away from that midnight call to a Psychic Hot-Line, we have come up with a simple step-by-step plan to assist you. You will need a floor jack and some masking tape.
To determine if you have a Open style diff or a Limited Slip / Locker style diff, you will need to start on a level surface and chock the front wheels. Place the vehicle in neutral and release the parking brake. Jack up the vehicle so that "Both" wheels are off the ground. Rotate one wheel in a forward direction. With an Open Style diff, the opposite wheel will turn in an opposite direction. With a Limited Slip or Locker, both wheels will turn in the same direction. If you have a Limited Slip or Locker, leave both wheels off the ground and determine your gear ratio now. Mark the wheel and fender with a piece of tape to give you a starting and stopping mark. Rotate the wheel slowly "One" complete rotation while counting the driveshaft rotation. You can mark the driveshaft or rear end yoke with tape or chalk to make it easier to count. If you see the driveshaft rotate 3 ½ times, your ratio would be 3.50. With ratios like a 3.25 or 3.42, you will need to be more accurate in watching the rotation of the driveshaft.
For "Open" style differentials, lover the vehicle back down. Then jack up only "one" wheel until it is off the ground. Slowly rotate the wheel "Two" complete rotations and count the driveshaft turns to determine your ratio. |
