Those of you who have been by our new facility in Matunuck have likely already seen our giant baskets in the sky. We've certainly received our share of compliments about them and a million questions too. The most common question of all is "how did you ever get those things up there?" Well, as a Clark Farms Garden Club member, you are in on the secret. The ladder didn't have much to do with it. As big as they are, ole John Deere makes it pretty easy. Kudos to Hugo for handling the dirty work, and Kolleen for dreaming up another outstanding combination of our plants. The other question we get a lot is, " how much do they weigh?" Well, if they were filled solid with soil, they would weigh about 4500 lbs. We cheated with some light filler, so they only weigh about 1,000 lbs. Now that they're out, I think we can safely say that it is officially time for even the most conservative gardener to start planting.

It's in the bucket!
If you remember, last year we introduced Mike Merner's fabulous Earth Care Farm Compost in an easy to use 3 gallon returnable, refillable bucket. Sadly, it turned out that they weren't that easy to use. In fact the lids were nearly impossible to get off. This year we have discovered a new screw on top for our buckets and now they are truly easy to use. Not only can you get Mike's "Black Gold" in a small quantity again, but your not filling the landfill with another plastic bag. Stop in and see for yourself. There's nothing I know of that will do more for the success of your garden, except maybe water.

One of my favorite shrubs is one you've probably seen many times but never knew what it was. While this one looks like a bit like a dogwood, it's not. It's actually a viburnum. They're a New England native, and come in a variety of forms. The best known is the Korean Spice Viburnum which is very fragrant. The one pictured is Viburnum 'Shasta.' It's not fragrant, but it is long blooming and beautiful. They grow in full sun or part shade and make a great addition to most any yard. Mention this email and receive 20% off of the viburnum of your choice. |
