Praise Report
My youngest grandson was placed in a fosterhome. The baby's mother had had custody but had serious issues in her life. When we heard the bad news I immediately called my pastors and asked for prayer. I am happy to report that God answered our prayers and we got custody of our baby on October 14. I am priveleged to have a wonderful church family and wonderful pastors that are always available to pray when the need arises. We serve a merciful and loving God. I am a member of the UPC church in Lamesa, Texas, Pastor John and Vickie Lanham |

The Primary Purpose of Prayer By Rev. Thomas Suey The view that the purpose of prayer is not to change God's mind or change things but only to change us is a pious-sounding teaching that many Christians instinctively accept as true. The only trouble with this approach is that it is unscriptural. The primary purpose of prayer, as illustrated throughout Scripture, is precisely to change the way things are. Crucial matters in our personal lives, in our homes, in our churches, communities and in our nation, including much of God's own activity, are contingent upon our prayers. When the disciples were in the storm in Mark 6:48, Jesus came walking across the sea . . . "And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. " Jesus would have passed them by but something happened. Mark 6:49 "But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out." The key phrase is "they cried out." The Message says it like: Mark 6:48-49 "He intended to go right by them. But when they saw him walking on the sea, they thought it was a ghost and screamed, scared out of their wits.." It is my understanding that Jesus had no intention of intervening into their difficult circumstance until they cried out or shrieked or shall we shall, PRAYED. When you cry, God responds and you suddenly have all His attention!!! But YOU must cry out. Apparently this was a "test" for the disciples to see if they would practice the discipline of prayer. God steps in when we ask Him to intervene. Jesus likes our dependency upon Him and He wants a relationship with us. However, He desires us to initiate the relationship. Jesus has always done His part at Calvary and the outpour of the Holy Spirit. Now "prayer" is our response to His initiative. Don't succumb to the prayer of serenity no matter how pious it may appear on your wall plaque. Maybe you should dispose of that plaque and pray until something happens. If you don't see the results of your prayers in your lifetime, your children and grandchildren will. Throw away the plaque and become an agent of change in our world. Don't let your circumstances dictate your future to you! -WNOP | |

Seek First the Kingdom By Lisa Marshall
Have you ever analyzed your prayers? Are they more selfish than selfless? For the typical believer, the truth is the majority of our time in prayer is spent focused on self. "God bless me, my family, my health, my bank account, my happiness and my pleasure." We are like one young lady who prayed, "Lord, I ask nothing for myself, but please send my mother a fine, handsome son-in-law." Certainly God can and does bless us in all these areas and more, but when this is the exclusive focus of our prayers, it reflects that we have lost sight of some very valuable principals of prayer. "God, what can I do for You?" Too often we have a shopping list mentality, coming to God to get "things" rather than coming to God to get God Himself and seek His will. How many times do we just come to God and ask "God, what can I do for You today or what would You have me pray for?" In the Sermon on the Mount, Christ taught His disciples to pray "Your kingdom Come," and to "seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." (Matthew 6:10 & 33) Kingdom focused prayer's end in not my success and happiness, but the building of God's kingdom and the power of His righteousness in the lives of His children. Jesus said this type of praying would produce God's adding to us "all these things." Seek FIRST the Kingdom in prayer this week and see what happens! |

1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article with Gwyn Oakes about the Praying Mothers of Brazil. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenney suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. The burden was shared with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director. From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter. |
