Five Finger Prayer
praying hands

1. Your thumb is nearest you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loved ones is, as C. S. Lewis once said, a 'sweet duty.'

2. The next finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, and ministers. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers.

3. The next finger is the tallest finger. It reminds us of our leaders. Pray for the president, leaders in business and industry, and administrators. These people shape our nation and guide public opinion. They need God's guidance.

4. The fourth finger is our ring finger. Surprising to many is the fact that this is our weakest finger, as any piano teacher will testify. It should remind us to pray for those who are weak, in trouble or in pain. They need your prayers day and night. You cannot pray too much for them.

5. And lastly comes our little finger - the smallest finger of all - which is where we should place ourselves in relation to God and others. As the Bible says, 'The least shall be the greatest among you.' Your pinkie should remind you to pray for yourself. By the time you have prayed for the other four groups, your own needs will be put into proper perspective and you will be able to pray for yourself more effectively

Mothers' Influence

By Kari ShirleyDOZ Kari Shirley

Bro. Willi was born the son of a voodoo priest in Haiti. From the age of 3, his parents began to prepare him for priesthood by taking him into the forests and cemeteries where they worshipped demons and did rituals and sacrifices to the devil.  They even sacrificed family members to obtain more power in their religion.  In 2005, his mother was killed because she stood up to those who wanted to sacrifice Bro. Willi to the devil.  That was when he decided he didn't want to serve Satan anymore and found his way out of the voodoo religion.  He repented of his sins and was baptized in Jesus' Name.  We witnessed him receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost as he shook under the power of God!  Yes, there is power in voodoo but thank God, there is more power in Jesus Christ!

Willi recently received license as a UPC pastor and now he leads a church group of about 100 in the city of Higuey, Dominican Republic.  During a recent visit to Bro. Willi's church, while praying for a woman in the altar, I felt her take my hand and place it on the head of her small child.  With tears in my eyes I prayed that God would protect him and cover him with the blood of Jesus and that he would receive the Holy Ghost when he was old enough.  Soon another mother came bringing her children for me to pray for them.  Those who know me would know that the prayers weren't demonstrative, so I know it wasn't the exuberance of my prayers.  But one after one, they brought their children, many of them actually taking my hand and placing it on their children's heads.  I was amazed at the hunger and desire of these mothers to have their children prayed for and covered by the blood of Jesus!

We may not be able to imagine placing our child into the hands of the enemy so that he/she can be used by Satan, but many of these Haitian mothers were very familiar with this concept.  How wonderful that they now know that there is more power in Jesus Christ than in Satan!  And they know the importance of placing their children in God's hands for protection from the enemy.

How about you.... Have you placed your children in God's hands again today?

Job Description for a Father
By Sherry Phillips

"Teach them diligently to your children." Deuteronomy 6:7 NKJV

 Abraham had a nephew called Lot who succeeded in business, but lost his family.
How come?
  1. he had the wrong emphasis-he placed material success above spiritual success; 2)  he had the wrong environment-he thought his children could live in Sodom and not be affected by it;
  2. he had the wrong expectation-he thought he could change his surroundings by compromising with them;
  3. he set the wrong example-he thought his family would follow his
  4. instructions; instead they followed his lifestyle;
  5. he had the wrong relationships-he didn't realize until it was too late , how much Sodom had influenced his family (see Genesis 19:4-5).

When my husband Phil was a young teenager, he was awakened every morning at 5:30a.m. to the sound of his father praying.  Phil's father was not just saying how important a personal relationship with God is, but was leading by example.  If you think you can live by the world's rules and expect your children to follow God's, you're kidding yourself.  We must lead by example.

Outside of your influence as a parent, the four greatest influences in your child's life are their peers, the internet, media, and music.  Your child's character is being moulded each day; the question is, by whom?  As a parent, God's World clearly states that we are to instruct, train, provide for them, nurture, discipline and love our children.

When Life Breaks

DOZ Reta AlphinBy Reta Alphin

Life deals blows that leave us reeling and wondering, "Will this pain ever go away?" "Will there be a day that I don't feel the ache in my heart, and painful memories of this  hurt that was done to me?"

As with serious physical injury, emotional injuries are just as devastating. In fact, the healing process is similar. A wound is an injury in need of treatment to heal. A scar is a reminder where the wound once was. Most of us are familiar with the treatment required for a physical wound, but there are some important steps in treating an emotional wound as well in order to avoid infection setting in.

1. Forgive. Forgiving does not mean rebuilding a friendship, but it does mean you can move on and have peace that you have done what God mandated. Love your enemies, pray for them that despitefully use you (Matthew 5:44). Forgiveness will be a process. Just as the bleeding of a physical wound does not stop immediately, the bleeding and pain in your heart will not either. Forgiveness also does not mean that you will forget the pain. Even when a horrible physical wound no longer needs a bandage seeing the scar, will remind you of the hurt.

2. Do not get bitter. Bitterness is a cancer that will destroy if allowed to fester. Bitterness can be related to dirt in a wound that is not taken out. An emotional wound must be disinfected to rid it of any speck of dirt that could cause an infection of bitterness to take over.

3. Restoration. God will restore. The Bible says to trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding (Proverbs 3:5). You may not understand the reason why you went through the painful experience, but if you trust in God, you can count on him to restore what the locust and cankerworm have eaten (Joel 2:25).

4. What men meant for evil, God meant for good (Genesis 50:20). At the time of a wound, seeing good come from it seems impossible. Many times the worst pain brings one to a place where God will use them the greatest. Jesus Christ Himself had to go through Calvary in order to fulfill his purpose to be the salvation to the world!

5. Use your experience to help other hurting people. Be sensitive to people around you. Perhaps they are hurting. Share the "scar" with others. Knowing there is a treatment and hope is helpful for someone in the beginning stages of a wound.

Remember, when life breaks, you CAN regain hope through Jesus Christ!

1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article with Gwyn Oakes about the Praying Mothers of Brazil. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenny suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. The burden was shared with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director.
From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter
