Prayers That Reach Beyond

By Betty Cicero
If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again, the song, penned in 1922 by John Whitfield Vaughan in memory of his praying mother came to mind this year, as I said my goodbyes to my own dear praying mother. I know she prayed many prayers during the course of my own 52 years. Prayers that kept me afloat, encouraged and helped to keep me in the perfect will of God.
For the last few weeks of my mother's life, she couldn't speak, but used a few hand signals. When she knew the Lord was finished with her in this life, and leaving would be soon, she began to point upward. I cherished those last days with her, praying and singing and reading the Bible to her.
She had struggled with the feelings of being useless in her last few years, as others did most everything for her. She would question as to what value she could be to the Kingdom of God during that time. But it was during those last few weeks and months that several people came to me and shared how encouraging she was to them even while she was immobile.
A nursing staff member came to me one of the last days with tears in her eyes and related to me that one of mother's caregivers was a backslider. But as my mother requested that the caregiver read the Bible to her, it began its work on the young lady.
What a joy to know that we can effectively lead souls to Christ whether we feel capable or not!
A mother's prayers for her children are priceless. They will stand the test of storms and the shadows of death. 12 prayer meetings per year that focus on our children may seem so inadequate, yet we never really know what is accomplished by them.
Mother didn't receive awards or accolades at the end of her life for the prayers she prayed; they weren't necessary. Her awards will Reach Beyond the now to the eternal. Our Daughters of Zion prayer meetings are doing the same-REACHING BEYOND!
