                     Prayers That Reach Beyond

DOZ Betty Cicero

 By Betty Cicero

If I Could Hear My Mother Pray Again, the song, penned in 1922 by John Whitfield Vaughan in memory of his praying mother came to mind this year, as I said my goodbyes to my own dear praying mother. I know she prayed many prayers during the course of my own 52 years. Prayers that kept me afloat, encouraged and helped to keep me in the perfect will of God.

For the last few weeks of my mother's life, she couldn't speak, but used a few hand signals. When she knew the Lord was finished with her in this life, and leaving would be soon, she began to point upward. I cherished those last days with her, praying and singing and reading the Bible to her.

She had struggled with the feelings of being useless in her last few years, as others did most everything for her. She would question as to what value she could be to the Kingdom of God during that time. But it was during those last few weeks and months that several people came to me and shared how encouraging she was to them even while she was immobile.

A nursing staff member came to me one of the last days with tears in her eyes and related to me that one of mother's caregivers was a backslider. But as my mother requested that the caregiver read the Bible to her, it began its work on the young lady.

What a joy to know that we can effectively lead souls to Christ whether we feel capable or not!

A mother's prayers for her children are priceless. They will stand the test of storms and the shadows of death. 12 prayer meetings per year that focus on our children may seem so inadequate, yet we never really know what is accomplished by them.

Mother didn't receive awards or accolades at the end of her life for the prayers she prayed; they weren't necessary. Her awards will Reach Beyond the now to the eternal. Our Daughters of Zion prayer meetings are doing the same-REACHING BEYOND!

DOZ Ruth WittmeierThe Awesome Privilege of Motherhood

By Ruth Wittmeier

Mothers of the Bible days who took their role seriously found God's favor and their children grew up to be God-fearing leaders in Israel's history and of the church. If these women did not take their role seriously, we may not have had Moses or Samuel, Daniel or Jesus.

I think of Mary, the mother of Jesus. The scriptures say she was chosen because she was well favored of God. What was it about her that gave her this favor? Mary had quality of character thanks to her parents that took their role seriously in raising her.

Mothers today bear the spokesmen of the Savior. I'm thinking of the mothers of the ministers in the UPCI Order of Faith. As I read their stories I realized their lives were not

easy, some even single parents. They put into their children a love and a commitment for God and a relationship with God that took them through the tough times of life.

Every child should be raised to serve the Lord. Their individual calling is between them and God. Our job as mothers (parents) is to equip them with the quality of character to be able to step into whatever ministry God calls them to do.

The parents of Nasserite children had to take special care of everything they did when raising an extraordinary child.

Mothers you are raising an extraordinary child. Your child may be a messenger of the Lord. Take care how you raise him or her.

Be careful what this child sees and listens to. They will not be the men or women of God if their minds are fed a diet of worldly music, worldly morals and worldly values. Be careful what they hear. Make sure they never hear you criticizing the man of God. Be careful where they go. They don't need to be around sin and evil so much that they become comfortable with it.

DOZ Boy PrayMothers you are raising children who will be leaders in God's Kingdom. Will they have the quality of character to find the favor of God, to be His spokesman? Someone's soul salvation is depending on you to do your job well. God has given us an awesome privilege that He will help us with every step of the way.

Praise Report

Beth* grew up in our church, married and had a son. They backslid and divorced. Because Beth could not provide her ex-husband was granted custody. She moved away and lost all contact with her son.

Four years ago Beth came home and back to God. She is precious. Two months ago in our DOZ prayer we began to pray about her son. She had no idea where he was. We prayed that he would look for her. TODAY she received a letter from her ex sister-in-law, her son is looking for her! I just had to share with someone. It's a miracle!!!! ...a DOZ miracle!!!!  -Janice R.

1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article with Gwyn Oakes about the Praying Mothers of Brazil. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenny suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. The burden was shared with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director.
From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter.
