TraitsDOZ Joann Thornton From the Family Tree
By Joann Thornton

Recently, I had the privilege of attending our 'Winkler' family reunion.  Every age group was in attendance. There were those with white hair, bent backs and feeble steps, women with grandbabies bouncing on their laps, grandfathers, young mothers and rowdy children.  Overheard were conversations such as, "Now, who are your parents?" or "How are we related?", and statements like, "My mother was your grandfather's sister, so that makes me your uncle 'twice removed.'" We were amused at our difficulty in figuring out our connections in the family tree and laughed as we tried to put a title on the connections as the understanding of the relation finally became clear to us.

However, in that large group of family members, many of them strangers to me, were some distinct and obvious likenesses in height, hair, eye color or skin tone. One distinctive physical attribute, for instance, my brother and I have large hands, easily spanning a piano octave or "palming" a basketball. On that day it was clear to see that this characteristic was an inherent genetic trait from my grandfather, as he and all of his brothers too possessed large hands.

The afternoon consisted of reminiscing; this Dad, that aunt or cousin at this farm, that holiday or that untimely death. Interestingly, the relative most discussed that day was great grandmother Hester. Stories of her life continued to be shared, comments like:  "She prayed for me and I was healed of infantile paralysis as a baby", "Hester never spoke negative of anyone", "She would work all day in the field, come home, make dinner for everyone, not eat anything herself for days and I remember her doing this often", "You never heard Hester complain", "I knew the place she loved to pray" and "People from all over the county, sent for Hester when their children or wife would become sick." These stories infected me, and as the day went on, I found myself praying, "God, please let these characteristics and attributes be found in me; a hunger for You above other things, an intimate relationship with You that brings selflessness and a life that nourishes others with the power, love and life flowing from You."

It would be nice if we would genetically inherit 20/20 vision, high metabolism and an impeccable memory, but the coveted heirloom would be to obtain that remarkable, powerful spiritual connection to our Heavenly Father...and then pass it on to those who come after us!

The Power of Praying ParentsDOZ Berni Cupoli
By Bernie Cupoli

In everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let

your requests be made known unto God. Philippians 4:6

When my husband and I were newlyweds, we prayed for God's will and anointing. At that time, these were the most important (spiritual) needs in our lives.

THEN, we had children! Our prayer life changed forever. A feeling of urgency came over us as we gazed upon our first beautiful child. I thought, "If this child makes it to Heaven it will be because we raised him in the fear of the Lord and we prayed for him."

God blessed us with three beautiful children -Scott, Kristi and Nathan.  Daily, we taught them the ways of God. We prayed for them and with them.  We did everything we knew to make sure our children were saved. Little did we know that when teen-aged years came, so would spiritual warfare. That's when we really learned the power of prayer!  We bombarded Heaven for the souls of our children. We were determined that Hell would never have them.

We did exactly what Matthew 7:7-8 told us to do. We asked, we sought, and we knocked on the doors of Heaven every day until our children returned to God. God has allowed them to all stay in ministry at our local church. Many times, as speakers come by our church, they say, "You are so blessed to have all of your children in your church and in ministry!"  We smile and say, "We are so thankful!"  We realize this could all change tomorrow - God's will takes us to different places at different times of our lives but for right now, life is VERY good!

We are now in the "grandparent" season of our lives. God has blessed us with five beautiful grandchildren. That same commission from God that we had for our children has now transferred to our grandchildren. Whatever it takes to see them saved is our spiritual goal. Our children have given us the privilege of being spiritual mentors of our grandchildren. Praying with them, reading the Word to them and teaching them God's truths is just a way of life for us

The power of praying parents can never be underestimated!  Prayer can move any mountain.  Take time to pray today for your children (and grandchildren)!

Editors Note: Berni Cupoli is mother of three beautiful children, who are in ministry in their local church and grandmother of five gorgeous grandchildren. She is also Pastor's Wife of United Pentecostal Church of El Monte, CA and Ladies Ministires Secretary of SoCal District. She enjoys spending as much time as she can with her family and faithfully walking and exercising each day to remain healthy

Focused Prayer -Positive Speaking

Week 1 - Battlefield of the Mind
In the Name of Jesus Christ We Pray...

· Let us not "mind" the things of the flesh but "mind" the things of the Spirit.
· Remove the confusion from our minds that we might walk in thy perfect will.
· Give us great faith as we speak Your Word with boldness and with authority.
· You care about us, we give You all our cares and worries.
· Fill us with the peace of God as we trust in You to provide all our needs.
· Keep our minds focused on You Lord, for right-thinking brings on right actions.
· Give us a Christ-like mind so that our thoughts and behavior will follow in Your footsteps.

Week 2 - The Mind Affects your Speech
In the Name of Jesus Christ We Pray...
· Purify our lips by removing all defilement from our hearts and minds.
· Discipline our tongues to refrain from gossip, judging, criticizing, and faultfinding.
· Don't allow us to break another person's spirit by the things we say.
· Bridle our tongue so that we may be slow to speak, slow to take offense, and slow to get angry.
· Fill our hearts and mind with a spirit of appreciation for all You have done for us.
· Let our conduct and speech back up our spiritual claims and promises.
· May we allow Your Words to be food for thought and nourishment to our bodies.

Week 3 - Train to Speak Positive
In the Name of Jesus Christ We Pray...
· Make us ever mindful of guarding our tongues, speaking only positive words.
· Help us to think twice before speaking once, avoiding strife and contention.
· We plead the blood of Jesus over our thoughts, the words we speak and our actions.
· Your Spirit, Lord, can tame our tongues. Keep us from mischief and vain words.
· Remind us that self-control is essential in guarding the words we speak.
· Give us boldness and wisdom to declare the truths of Your Word unto others
· Keep our lips from words of contention and condemnation.

Week 4 - Battlefield God's Mouthpiece

In the Name of Jesus Christ We Pray...
· Quicken Your Word within us and grant us wisdom to encourage and help others.
· Teach us to speak words of encouragement, refraining from corrupt conversations.
· Deliver us from bitterness, anger, shouting, and hatred.
· Teach us to be kind to one another.
· Help us to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves" in all our conversations.
· Bind Your Word in our hearts so we will speak words of wisdom in the workplace and in our homes.
· Keep our focus on You, Lord, so we can become Your mouthpiece in a world that needs You.
