Communication with God By Gwyn Oakes, UPCI LM President
How do we communicate with God? By prayer and the reading of His Word. If the disciples of Christ felt their most urgent request was to learn to pray, it would follow that it should be the greatest need we have. The disciples did not ask Jesus to teach them to preach, to teach, or to sing-their request was, "Teach us to pray." While all the things mentioned are a vital part of our worship and service to him, we communicate with Him through prayer.
I learned about the power and the privilege of prayer after my mother died when I was only three years old. I began to have night mares and when I would awaken screaming, Daddy would come quickly and hold me, as he talked to God about my fears. When I was sick, he prayed, as I grew up I heard him pray for me. He prayed, he prayed... His relationship with his creator was so special I wanted that communication with God for myself.
Prayer was an essential practice for the church in the New Testament. It must be of the greatest importance in our lives if we are to continue the work of the Kingdom of God. When we pray fervently we know that Christ's power is at work. How? Because James 5:16 declares, "The effectual fervent prayer... availeth much."
Prayer is like any other exercise. It is most beneficial if it is consistent. We cannot separate prayer from everyday life. Satan knows our weaknesses and will do his best to distract our minds and thoughts while praying. So discipline in prayer is very necessary. If we can be separated from our source of strength and understanding then our mission will not be accomplished. We should pray for God to open doors for us, and to give us direction in our calling just as he did for Apostle Paul.
Prayer is a partnership with God for His redemptive purpose on earth. Only by intercessory prayer can the power be brought down from heaven which will enable the church to fulfill the call he has given us. Communicate with Him today and every day! Let your children hear you pray-teach them by example the power of prayer!

Focused Prayer - Walk The Talk
Week 1 - Thoughts In The Name Of Jesus Christ We Pray . . .
- Help us to take every thought captive and line it up with the Word of God.
- Change our negative thinking into positive thoughts.
- Fix our thoughts on what is true and honorable and right.
- Guide our thoughts and may we be led by Your Holy Spirit.
- Renew our minds with a right attitude and continually bring thoughts of You to our minds.
- Show me when I have filled my mind with anything that is ungodly.
- We submit every thought to you, give us a Christ-like mind so that we can Walk The Talk.
Week 2 - Words In The Name Of Jesus Christ We Pray . . .
- Help us to use every opportunity we have to share the Good News to others.
- Remind us that what comes out of our mouth reveals what is in our hearts.
- Keep my mouth from speaking any evil or untrue word.
- May every word we speak reflect your purity, love, and kindness.
- Purify our hearts and give us self control so that we speak words that please God.
- Give us the courage to speak boldly of our faith in Jesus Christ.
- When we are hurt or criticized, help us to not lash out at others.
Week 3 - Actions In The Name Of Jesus Christ We Pray . . .
- Keep us from blending in with the world and accepting its values and lifestyles.
- Help us to live up to God's standard of morality.
- Help us to never rationalize our actions and dampen the image of God in our lives.
- Don't allow the things which You have given to us to enjoy, grow into bad habits that control us.
- Teach us to worship You with our whole heart and reverence Your Holy Name.
- Help us to become doers of the Word, putting Your Word into action.
- Remove all selfishness from our hearts and fill us with a spirit of generosity.
Week 4 - Walk In The Name Of Jesus Christ We Pray . . .
- Draw us to read and study the Word of God so that we will know the truth and live by it.
- Since our body is a temple of Your Holy Spirit, help us to not violate Your standards for living.
- Search my heart and try me and see if there is any wickedness in me.
- Help us to separate ourselves from anything that is not holy.
- Remind us that we are not merely Your followers, but that we are Your representatives.
- Fill us with Your grace and power to walk in integrity.
- Encourage us to make prayer a top priority in our lives.

The Princess and the King By Beth Burns
Sarah came to Living Word Church in her late teens after her parents gave their lives to the Lord. Sarah saw the great change in their lives, but had many questions. Finally, the day came when she decided to give God her whole being.
The name Sarah means "princess" and truly, Sarah was just that. She had a darling personality, and everyone loved her. Sarah had a true love for the Lord that caused her to worship with abandon before her King. She became a Sunday School teacher and helped with the youth.
One day, in her Sunday School class, she decided give her personal testimony. She told of her life before Christ with its parties and fun. She also told them of her struggle to really know God, and the many questions she asked. She ended the lesson by letting them know that she had found the truth and church was where she always wanted to be.
Sarah left that following week to attend her great grandmother's funeral in El Paso, Texas. Her great grandmother loved the Lord and was ready to meet God. During the journey, Sarah was involved in a roll- over accident, and was instantly ushered into the presence of her King. We were stunned. The days that followed were full of questions, but the one thing that amazes me about our King is His desire for His bride. He had been the one all along who put that desire in Sarah's heart to serve Him and to be ready for her death.
On the day Sarah was born, God knew the day of her death, and He lovingly prepared her heart for that moment. In the end, we can truly say her life was one of victory over the world system and death. "And therefore will the Lord wait, that he may be gracious unto you, and therefore will he be exalted, that he may have mercy upon you: for the Lord is a God of judgment: blessed are all they that wait for him" -Isaiah 30:18
Brother and Sister Burns evangelized before serving as Foreign Missionaries to Venezuela, South America, and the Dominican Republic. They served at the World Evangelism Center, UPCI, and then returned to the Foreign Mission Division as International Evangelists. The Burns now pastor the Living Word Church in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, where Brother Burns is the Texico District Superintendent.

From the Mail Box
Greetings from Holland. It is our pleasure to be able to use this publication here in Holland. It is a blessing to our sisters here and we appreciate all the hard work that you ladies do to make it possible. We also appreciate the fact that you get it to us in order that the translation (into Dutch) can take place and our ladies can have it on time. -Dianna Tuttle, Missionary, The Netherlands
Apostolic greetings to you from Prague, Czech Republic! Dear Sister Oakes, we appreciate all the work you do through the efforts of Ladies Ministries UPCI. Your faithful and dedicated ministries have continuously blessed and propelled the work of the Kingdom around the world year after year, touching so many lives, including mine. You are greatly appreciated! Because of the great vastness of the Europe/Middle East Region, not only in size but culturally as well, we are presently in the process of further developing our web-site, http://upcieme.com/ladies
It is our most earnest desire to somehow allow each woman to feel connected to the Body of Christ, even though she may have feelings of detachment due to her culture or environment, or is physically separated by great distance from others of like precious faith. It is our plan to place your official web-site of Ladies Ministries UPCI as a link on our Europe/Middle East Regional Ladies site, thus allowing a quick and easy connection of our EME ladies to the valuable resources, articles, and inspirational material you are presently providing. -Becky Buckland, Secretary/EME Regional Ladies Ministries Commission, (Missionary/Czech Republic)

Prayer Idea
GIVE EACH LADY a pocket calendar with the church children's birthdays listed. She will be reminded to pray for each child on his/her birthday.
I PLACED A Post-it on my work computer this past year that reads "Praise Break" I run an eight-line phone for a public high school and sometimes I barely have time to breath! So when I see my "Praise Break" sticky it reminded me to STOP for 30 seconds and give my God some praise or repeat my memory verse. It works wonders on those busy, busy days and when someone asks me what it is...I share the tip. -Blanca Gamon,Worship & Word, Peoria, Arizona.
NOTE: One might adapt this idea by adding the names of the children to pray for on the Post-it note!

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; ...honor to whom honor is due. (Romans 13:7). Daughters of Zion: 1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article about the Praying Mothers of Brazil with Gwyn Oakes. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenney suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. Sister Oakes shared her burden with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director. From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter.
