Let it be your "call to prayer."
Join Us in a Unified Effort to Seek God's Face

Ladies Ministries of UPCI has declared 2009 as The Year of Seeking. During this year we will seek God's face through fasting and prayer for an awakening in our souls for His heartbeat.

Unite with us each evening at 8:00 PM (CST) for one minute of prayer as we come before God with humility to seek the paths of righteousness and holy living.

We also ask that you join with us in fasting the first Monday of each month.

"For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach in Israel statutes and judgments" (Ezra 7:10).

 Lessons From a SunflowerDOZ Sunflower3
 By Shirley Buxton

When we are able to spend time at our home in Crestline, CA, one of the first things I do when we arrive is go to our gardens in the back to see how the plants are prospering. They have done exceptionally well during the more than two years we have been in Lake Havasu, for our house has set empty, and the yards have mostly taken care of themselves. We do have rudimentary sprinklers, but they don't cover everywhere, and we have lost some plants. All in all, though, given the circumstances we are pleased.

A couple of weeks ago, I walked into the back, and there in a graveled area where there is a swing and other lawn furniture, had sprung up this magnificent sunflower. We don't have sunflowers anywhere on our property, nor am I aware of any in the neighbor's places, but somehow a seed had blown in or had been carried by a bird and dropped there. While we weren't looking, the determined seed burrowed into the little-watered earth, clamped down, rooted, and then, from within the decaying shell, there pushed up green tendrils, so determined, so healthy that a stalk formed, and, still while we weren't looking, buds formed, and then one opened. And there it was, a glorious, golden sunflower.

Amazing, isn't it. A whole knot of stunning lessons is here.

First, don't try to be something you are not. Be who you are. A sunflower is not an exotic plant, but a rather common flower, probably even considered a weed in some circles. Think about it, though. Should he try to be an orchid or a petunia or a tomato, he would certainly fail. But at being a sunflower, he excels, he flourished, for that was his purpose, his destiny.

Second, don't complain about conditions. Dry earth? Dig in a little harder. A deserted garden? You never know who will visit some time. Lack of fertilizer? Look within yourself, engage your inner strength and resources.

Third, don't worry that no one is seeing you do your work. Just keep at it. Not a human in this world knew that little seed was working in our patch of land, never an eye saw the little fella push up through the earth and poke out his tender head, not one ear heard the cracking of the bud and the sprouting of the leaves. Finally, though, I saw it, and admired it, and took its picture, and watered it, and thought about it, and wrote its story.

Think about it, though. Think harder. There are thousands of sunflowers who do their magnificent job...and truly no one ever knows, no one admires nor snaps pictures, nor picks for a bouquet. Is their work wasted? Energy expended in vain? No. God knows; He who spoke and who gave the seed and ignited the germ sees and notes...and one day, perhaps through the wind of a thunder, may blow a seed, un-noted, unexceptional, common, mundane into someone's garden and bring joy.

Number four. Your lifework creates a place for others. When I went out in the morning to take pictures of my sunflower, I looked closely, and deep within its parts were tiny insects and water drops that had settled into the glowing compartments. Oh, you may not know, never be aware, but your sterling life, your integrity, your living to purpose creates a dwelling place for others...brings peace and trust and refuge. As I watched, insects scurried about in the golden place of a common ordinary sunflower, a sunflower that was living to purpose and to destiny.

How about us? Wonder how we're doing. Is it possible we can learn today from a common glorious sunflower?

The Netherlands
In The Netherlands the ladies come together once a month in the cities of Dordrecht, Hoofddorp and Zaandam to pray for their children, the children of the church and their community.

Sometimes the ladies hold prayer walks near schools.  Prayer is made for the children as well as the teachers and school administrators. Doors have opened, and God has blessed our ladies' labor of prayer.

Each month, the Daughters of Zion newsletter is translated into Dutch and distributed to all of our ladies. It has proven to be a blessing as well.

We now have ladies who are praying together with other mothers outside of our church for their children and the schools which they attend. This is awesome. -Dianna Tuttle, The Netherlands.

God is doing great things here in Mississippi. We just held our 6th Stone County Back To School Prayer Rally, "1 Child 1Life 1 Promise" in the Hands Of 1 Teacher. We had over 50 teachers attend this year and go back to ...share this wonderful meeting with their peers. 300+ came out from the community and joined in focus prayer for the protection of children and schools. We also prayed for every level of government and a safer community. Our Community Choir sang, "We Are The Light Of The World" and "I Need You To Survive" closed out the meeting with pastors from the community holding hands and the entire congregation holding hands as well. The Community Children Choir did "I AM A Promise" We are looking to next year with great anticipation! Donna Ten Eyck, MS DOZ Direct

Our DOZ praise report is exciting and a little different. Larry Bigelow has been away from God since he was a young person. But it was his faithful father praying and requesting prayer for him, because Larry's mother was also backslidden.
Larry's father attends church in a different city in our section, but with Larry living near us, his father would come down occasionally and they would attend our services, and we placed Larry on our prayer list.

Larry decided to attend General Conference in Tampa with his father, and received the Holy Ghost during the Crusade! He has been faithfully involved in the church since he returned from Conference, and came the other day with a prayer request of his own: his mother's salvation.  With a twinkle in his eye, he told us he has asked his mother to give him piano lessons (she was the church pianist when he was a child), but told her he only wants to learn "church songs"! We are excited about the possibilities of what God will do for this family, all because a father who, for years, has been faithful in service and prayer!

UPDATE: Larry had a few rocky months because his work schedule and old friends in the area were really pulling him, not able to be in church, etc. He finally moved to be near his parents, is back in church strong and doing good.  We heard just two weeks ago, his Mother prayed back through! So, once again the faithful prayers of a father brought his family back to Truth! Kind of a reverse DOZ, but God healed a family! -Leah Seagraves, Christian Life Center, SeaTac, WA
Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; ...honor to whom honor is due. (Romans 13:7).
Daughters of Zion: 1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article about the Praying Mothers of Brazil with Gwyn Oakes. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenney suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. Sister Oakes shared her burden with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director. From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers  joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter.
