What is Prayer?

To the small child it is asking Jesus for what you want. The weary, burdened father would say that it is giving the responsibility to the Lord. The priest would contradict that prayer is confession of sins, while the musician would emphasize that it is worship and praise. But to the one who really touches God declares, prayer is being with Jesus and knowing it!

Prayer has taken me through home missions twice, through thirty-one years of foreign missionary service, and raising two children who both serve the Lord.  Now I find that the need to pray is greater than ever, and I enjoy the time with 'my Jesus'.  -Sister Bev (Anita) Well

Prayer & Bible
The Prayer Guide
Here's a prayer guide that assigns a different area to pray for each day of the week. Each day's prayer "assignment" begins with the same letter as the day of the week. It's easy to remember and helps us ensure that we've got it all covered. Print this out for you and others in your prayer groups.

Sunday...Studies  Pray for the Bible studies, mentoring groups, book clubs and any other small groups that will meet in the coming week.

Monday...Ministry  Ask for God's direction for yourself and those who lead with you. Pray for specific ministry needs.

Tuesday...To Do's  Need we say more? We all have a list. Let's pray about it.

Wednesday...World  Pray for the nations, the missionaries, the persecuted church and governments around the world.

Thursday...Those in Need  Lift up those who are hurting, lonely or poor. Pray for those who need a Savior.

Friday...Future Plans  We all have dreams. Let's commit the future of our ministries to God.

Saturday...Sunday Services  Pray for your pastor, for others who serve and those who will worship with you this week.

You may choose to adapt this plan to apply even more specifically to your ministry.

DOZ Bonnie PeacockA Sweet Fragrance
     Bonnie Peacock

"For we are the sweet fragrance of Christ"
(2 Corinthians 2:15, Amplified).

As I hurried through the grocery story a delightful fragrance made me pause. I turned to see whose perfume had caught my attention. I did not know her but liked her regardless. She had brought something pleasant into my ordinary day.
It has been said that we leave a bit of ourselves behind wherever we go. Like the lingering waft of scent, a whiff of us remains after we depart. If that is true, what lingers after I leave?

Some days are not easy. As I pass by others it is possible for me to leave the stench of depression and misery. When I am angry or thinking unpleasant thoughts, I must reek of negativity. Is that what lingers in the minds of others? And I thought she was a Christian!

But instead of scattering traces of me, what if I left a suggestion of Christ? Evidence of His Majesty? The bouquet of peace, kindness, joy, and love? An oasis of fresh attitude in the desert of duty? A breath of sweet incense in the sea of selfishness? A pinch of forgiveness and patience? The vestige of compassion?

As an ambassador for Christ, perhaps my job for Him is more subtle than I imagined. (See 2 Corinthians 5:20.) Witnessing to others is my commission. (See Mark 16:15.) However when my busy schedule prohibits my embarking on a theological discourse, my presence can still emanate Him.

What is going on inside me is of vital importance. While I can think one way and speak another, the lack of sincerity is apparent. The Word of God is explicit in emphasizing the integrity of character.

"Whatsoever things are true ... honest ... just ... pure ...lovely ... good report ... virtue ... praise, think on these things" (Philippians 4:8).
"And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful" (2 Peter 1:5-8).

The choice is mine. Each day I decide. Will I release my will to His, allowing the Holy Spirit to do His work in me? If I concede, my personal agenda, daily schedule, and attitude become pliable to His direction. I am God's voice, hands, and feet in the world. When I give God my day, I must mean business. He does.

Wherever I am, I need to consider: Perhaps there is a reason I am waiting two hours? Is there anyone here who needs someone to listen? Maybe the lady standing ahead of me in this long checkout line needs a smile?

Paul thanked those who had ministered to his needs, "I am full, having received ... the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well-pleasing to God" (Philippians 4:18). Their actions were an aroma, pleasant both to him and the Lord.

I want my life to emit a delectable, enchanting, enjoyable, agreeable fragrance of love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, and temperance (See Galatians 5:22-23.), but I cannot produce these qualities alone.

The Apostle Paul declared he could not either. "I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I not live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me" (Galatians 2:20).

No one can live the Christ-life except Christ! It is imperative that I allow Christ to live out His life through me. When I allow the Holy Ghost to bathe me daily and immerse myself in His Word, a sweet aroma trails behind wherever I go.

Peter and John preached with boldness; those who heard marveled. "They took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus" (Acts 4:13). Being with Jesus brings the transformation I need. After spending time in His presence, the stench of flesh is gone, leaving the gratifying evidence that I too have been with Jesus.

Praise Reports and Meeting Ideas

Sis. Avon Colins testified at our Daughters of Zion meeting that she always prays with her two sons before school. Recently an electricity transformer exploded just as her twelve-year-old was passing it on his way home from school. He was drenched with oil, but there was no fire. Everyone was amazed because there is always fire when an incident like this happens. The Lord Jesus gave them a miracle. Our God Is AWESOME!
The Ladies love and enjoy the DOZ newsletter. Thank you. -Sis. Lamont, pastor's wife, UPCI, Trinidad

I pick one lady from church to lead focused prayer each month. They write a paragraph on what to pray for and what to pray against. This has helped them develop ways to pray. One month one of these women brought a bowl and filled it half way with water and put tea lights in it so they floated around on top. As we began prayer for certain children and families we placed sea shells in the water to represent the children and families. We put the children's pictures around the table to have a visual of them. Our focus is to place them in the hands of the Lord. DOZ is the greatest calling a mother can have! We have seen it work time & time again. -Denene Pelkey, Truth Tabernacle U.P.C Pittsfield, MA

A true story about prayer and God's protection...
Recently, Rev. Brian Kinsey had to make a trip here to the World Evangelism Center. As the plane was leaving Pensacola, FL, it taxied to the runway and began to increase its speed for takeoff. When the plane was about ready to leave the ground, it made a violent emergency stop. The pilot came out and explained, "All of our instruments said that we were safe to take off. However, just before we lifted off, we heard that one of the motors was not running, so we aborted the flight. If we had tried to take off, we would have crashed."

Brother Kinsey went in to the terminal and sat down. His cell phone rang.  When he answered a woman said, "About an hour ago, the Lord impressed me that I should pray a prayer of intercession for you immediately. I have been praying, and I have called to ask what is going on." Then Brother Kinsey told her the story.

Never underestimate the power of PRAYER.                     -WNOP

Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; ...honor to whom honor is due. (Romans 13:7).
Daughters of Zion: 1999, World Network of Prayer Director, Thetus Tenney shared an interesting article about the Praying Mothers of Brazil with Gwyn Oakes. Sister Oakes had a burden for this type of ministry and Sister Tenney suggested it as a venture for the Ladies Division. Sister Oakes shared her burden with the National Ladies Committee. Ruth Harvey expressed a desire to work with the program and was chosen as director. From the many titles submitted Daughters of Zion was chosen. Debbie Akers  joined as editor of the Daughters of Zion newsletter.
