Salaam Alaikum/Peace be with you,

It's been a while since you've received one of these newsletters.  Did you miss us?  We sure hope you did!

We won't lie; keeping United Muslim Foundation running has been a challenge without an Executive Director. There's a lot of work to be done, and our board members have been through everything from weddings to surgeries, making it hard to keep up.

But in the end, we decided that UMF's work and impact, and all we had accomplished even in our hardest times - when we were running simply on volunteer power - was just too important to give up on.

So... here we are again, regrouped, re-energized, and excited to get the ball rolling again. And we hope you are too (keep reading!)

Below you will find some updates on what we've been doing and where we're planning to go, as well as the usual announcements on area events you might be interested in.  But wait, there's more!

Besides the updates, we've also got some important information on how you can get more involved in the rebirth of UMF.  As I said before, there's a lot of work to be done, so we're looking to our main source of power - our volunteers - for help!  Please take a look below for more information on available positions, as well as to get an idea of the projects we have in mind.

Oh, yeah, there's one more thing...

UMF is also on the search for a new Executive Director!  We need somebody to help lead this organization to do all the great things we know it can do, and we hope you can help us find them!

Required qualifications include a bachelor's degree and at least three years of successful management or leadership experience, preferably within a nonprofit organization. Applications will be accepted through May 15, 2012.  For more information, please see the job posting below.

Thank you once again for your continued support!  I know it's cliche, but it's also 100% true that we just couldn't do it without you :-)

With wishes of peace,
Fatema Kermalli Walji, Director

P.S. When I mentioned that we'd regrouped, I meant it! Meet the rest of our new Board of Directors:

Masuma Virji: ChairAsma ChaudhrySecretary, Naushad Virji: Finance Director, Mohammed Kermalli: Assistant Finance Director, Zainab AlidinaRachid Mahdi, Syed YousufKhalid Mohammed, and Nadine Abu-Jubara.

UMF-PA: March for Babies

UMF is once again joining thousands of teams across the country in the annual March of Dimes "March for Babies" event to be held on Sunday, April 22nd. The team will be participating in the 2.5-mile walk beginning at Dorney Park in Allentown, PA.

The March of Dimes is a national voluntary health agency dedicated to saving the lives of America's babies. Their mission is to prevent birth defects, low birth weight, and infant mortality. Each year, an estimated 150,000 babies are born with often devastating birth defects. Another 500,000 babies are born too soon, drastically increasing the chance that they will die before their first birthday. That averages to 1 out of every 8 babies.  Premature birth is the #1 cause of newborn death and is growing at an alarming rate. That's why we need your help.

If you would like to join the team or sponsor a walker for this very worthy cause, please visit UMFs March for Babies website.

Credit/debit card and PayPal donations are accepted online. Thank you in advance for your support and for being a part of this great cause!

Hunger Team Update

Hungerteam Alhamdulillah, UMF Hungerteam has being going very well these past few months.  It is amazing to see how, month after month - without fail - the donations keep rolling in for the homeless!

This month already, we have collected a number of items to donate, including clothes, housewares, and much more.

Last month, Seminole High School collected and donated about 800 personal hygiene items, including shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and the like.

In addition, we are extremely fortunate to have community donors who help with the feedings.  Each week, Panera Bread Bakery donates breads and pastries to the homeless, while IHOP donates pancake batter for us to make fresh pancakes for breakfast.

Many, many thanks to all our donors!

Our next feeding is inshaAllah going to take place this Saturday from 9am -11:30am in Sanford.  Please join us for a few hours in helping to cook a hot breakfast for the needy who stay in and around the homeless shelter.
Arabic Class Update

UMF Scouts Arabic Program Welcome
UMF Scouts Arabic Program Welcome

UMF's Arabic program is in full swing, Alhamdulilah. We've even started an Adult online Arabic class as a pilot program because of increasing demand!

Dedicated students sacrifice 2.5 hrs of play time almost every Friday and Sunday evening to learn Arabic from our awesome teachers. As one student put it, "It is a good opportunity for people who care about the Arabic language, to learn it."

All our students are learning from the Medina Arabic Reader series and progressing quickly. They are even learning Arabic poetry and idioms and relating the words and phrases they're learning to Qur'an and Hadeeth. Our older class enjoyed conversation over coffee on their field trip this month to the coffee shop and local grocery store with their teacher.

UMF Arabic class is simply سوبر !

UMF Scouts Caprisun Brigade

Don't throw out your Caprisun pouches!

UMF Scouts are continuing to collect them in order to get points, which can then be used to support various different causes.

Last time, the Scouts collected 1,297 pouches and got 2,594 points.  With those points, they provided food to the hungry and school supplies to a homeless child, adopted 468 square feet of wildlife land, planted a tree, helped reduce 13 pounds of carbon from the atmosphere, and gave two baby chickens, one goose, and ten honey bees to needy families.

Help the UMF Scouts do their part for a better world.  Save and donate your Caprisun pouches!

Sincerely,

Board of Directors
