May the blessings be upon you on this auspicious month of Ramadhan. While we focus on our
prayers, fasting and try to refrain from any sin, our thoughts go out to the number of people suffering
from the massive floods in Pakistan which exceeds 13 million - more than the combined
total of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2005 Kashmir earthquake and the
2010 Haiti earthquake, according to an assessment made by the the United
Nations. This disaster has been acknowledged as the worst in Pakistan's history.
UMF is collecting donations to help aid those affected by these
floods. As Muslims it is our duty to help those who are suffering. With your generosity we know we will be able to make a difference and help give the people of Pakistan hope this Ramadhan.
Join us also in making a difference this Ramadhan by helping volunteer with one of our many events to help promote unity, education and charity. Insha-Allah we will be meeting at UCF Aug 26th at noon to discuss future events. If you'd like to help, drop us a line at info@unitedmuslimfoundation.org.

Each year, the MSA at UCF holds an event known as Fast-a-Thon. This event gives us the opportunity to give back to one of the populations that are most in need - the hungry. Every day around the world, over 1 billion people go without sufficient nutrition. On September 1st, we will go hungry for the day so they don't have to. On this day, we invite the student body and the public (Muslims and non-Muslims) to fast from sunrise and to break their fast and have "iftar", or dinner, with us after sunset. This means no food and no drink. We ask attendees to donate the money that they would have normally spent on a meal that day to the organization we select to sponsor-which will assist the hungry. Everyone is invited to attend, so bring your families and friends!
Please come join us for dinner and an enlightening evening, as we will be learning about the health benefits of fasting. We look forward to seeing you there!
If you are interested in volunteering before and during the event (promoting the event, setting up, ushering, cleaning up, etc) please let us know! |

Thank the Obama Administration A Note From United Voices For America
President Barack Obama, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Secretary Hillary Clinton today sent Ramadan Greetings to Muslims around the world. During an election year where some candidates and pundits are aggressively using Islamophobia as a campaign weapon, leaders who choose to celebrate our nation's religious freedom and diversity deserve our thanks and commendation.
ACT NOW! If the President of the United States has enough time to issue a Ramadan greeting (and host a White House iftar) then surely, we can make time to thank him for it, especially because we are going to make it easy for you.

Ground Zero Mosque Approved. Thank Mayor Bloomberg for Standing Up for Religious Freedom.
CAIR-New York is calling on American Muslims and
others who support freedom of religion to thank Mayor Michael Bloomberg for a
speech he gave yesterday defending the rights of Muslims and other Americans to
build houses of worship.
The address came shortly after New York's Landmarks Preservation Commission
voted unanimously against granting protected status to a building in lower
Manhattan, which would have impacted plans to buil...d a community center that would include a mosque in its
place. A campaign opposing the right to build the community center sought to
use the landmark process to block its construction.
In his remarks on Governors Island, Mayor Bloomberg
spoke about the history of religious minorities in New York City, recounting
the struggles of Jewish, Quaker and Catholic communities to establish their
right to worship freely.
Speaking of the mosque issue, he said: "I
believe that this is an important test of the separation of church and state as
we may see in our lifetime - as important a test - and it is critically
important that we get it right."
"...[I]t is my hope that the mosque will help
to bring our City even closer together and help repudiate the false and
repugnant idea that the attacks of 9/11 were in any way consistent with Islam.
Muslims are as much a part of our City and our country as the people of any
faith and they are as welcome to worship in Lower Manhattan as any other
group."
We thank Mayor Bloomberg for seeing through the
anti-Muslim smears and divisive political tactics that have clouded this
issue," said CAIR-NY Civil Rights Director Aliya Latif. "By clearly
supporting equal treatment and freedom of worship, Mayor Bloomberg has taken a
principled stand that is true to the essence of our Constitution.
Contact Mayor Bloomberg at mbloomberg@cityhall.nyc.gov or (212- NEW-YORK) and thank him for speaking up for freedom of religion. We would appreciate you sending us a copy of your communication at info@unitedmuslimfoundation.org

Stop the Burning of the Holy Qur'an!
On Sept. 11, Terry Jones' Dove World Outreach
Center will hold the first "International Burn a Koran Day" ceremony on the
steps of his church in Gainesville, Fla. According to the church's website, the

School Supplies Drive Crafts Smiles and Paints Hope
Since school is around the corner,
everyone is going crazy over the 'back to school' supplies sales. However, have
you thought about the other students who do not have parents like ours, who do
not have anyone to take them shopping when summer comes to an end? Every year, many abused children go to school with supplies they had from last
year, and even the year before that. Therefore, this year United Muslim
Foundation and Kids House held a school supplies donation drive to make a difference
in the lives of these children. From mid July to August 11th, drop off boxes were located at local Mosques with
members loading them with supplies. Mirella Halabi from IEC Orlando stated, "It's
a shame how some people overlook these opportunities to help out. These kids
need our help more than anyone." However, with all the promotion for donations needed, United Muslim Foundation collected
about 150 school supplies! From small children who wanted to donate their
crayons, to parents who doubled their school supplies list, it all came down to
a smile from an abused child. We sought the blessings of a scared child,
worried to go to school empty handed. We thank everyone from near and far who
made this drive a success!
"Never
underestimate what a simple gesture can do. It is the little things that you do
that make a big difference in other people's lives." -Catherine Pulsifer

Something to Think About... Goals of Fasting:
Achieving Taqwa:
is one of the most important wisdom of fasting. Fasting brings on Taqwa as it
lessens the desire of the stomach and mutes the sexual appetite. Whoever fasts
frequently would overcome these two desires more easily. This deter against
committing abominations and sins and assist in controlling life leading to
Taqwa.
Strengthening willpower and acquiring
patience: The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam called Ramadhan the
month of patience as it increases one's will power to control his desire and
the selfishness of his soul. This training allows him to be strong in following
Allah's commands. The most important being to carry the Message and propel it
forward. The person trains himself to be patient in obeying Allah by stopping
at the limits set by Allah both by way of action and abstention. Allah said:
"These are the limits set by Allah, so approach them not."
(Al-Baqarah 2:187)
Relieving Muslims from life's
distractions: Eating, drinking, and socializing all distract a person
and weaken ties with Allah. It is by the Mercy of Allah that Muslims are
ordered to fast so as not to be bothered by the intrusion of these activities.
Nor by the thought about them nor the anticipation for them when devoting
themselves to the all types of worship Either reading the Qur'an, offering
additional prayer or making I'tikaf. For this reason the Prophet sallallahu
alayhe wa sallam said: "Fasting is a shield, and a secure fortress against
Hell fire" (Related by Ahmad).
Discovering Allah's Blessings: A
person experiences the hardship of the poor. He should then be thankful to
Allah Who has blessed him with His bounty while others are deprived. This
should make him more sympathetic and willing to share this bounty. The poor
rediscovers that fasting helps a person be more devoted to worship. More able
to concentrate and meditate. He should then be able of this devotion all year
long, a blessing he should thank Allah for.

Acquiring strength and endurance:It
has been discovered that depriving the body of food for a period of time helps
its defense and endurance mechanism. This in turn this protects the body from
certain diseases.
Reading the Holy Qur'an: The
Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "Fasting and [reading] Qur'an
will intercede for the person: fasting will say: O Lord I forbade him eating
and drinking so let me intercede for him, and the Qur'an will say: I deprived
him from his night sleep so let me intercede for him," he then said:
"So they will intercede." (Related by Ahmad). The Prophet sallallahu
alayhe wa sallam used to recite the whole Qur'an to Angel Jibreel each
Ramadhan.
Giving in charity: Ibn Abbas
radhiallahu anhu said: "The Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam was the
most generous among people, and he was more generous during the month of
Ramadhan." (Related by Muslim).
Supplication: In the verses
dealing with fasting, Allah said: "And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad)
concerning Me, then answer them, I am indeed near to them. I respond to the
invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me." (Al-Baqarah 2: 186).
This is an encouragement for the fasting person to increase his invocation. The
Prophet sallallahu alayhe wa sallam said: "Three invocations will be
answered: The invocation of the fasting person, the invocation of the
oppressed, and the invocation of the traveler." (Related by Muslim).
Repentance: Ramadhan is the time
of repentance and return to Allah, for it is a time when the devils are
chained, and when many people are saved from hell fire every night by the grace
of Allah.
Abstaining from vain talk: Sins
decrease the reward of fasting although they do not annul it. The Prophet sallallahu
alayhe wa sallam said: "Fasting is not [only] abstaining from eating and
drinking, but abstaining from vain and obscene talk, so if someone insulted you
or wronged you say: I am fasting." (Related by al-Hakim) and he also said:
'Whoever does not abandon lying, then Allah does not need him to abandon his
food and drink." (Related by al-Bukhari). |
|
|
"And
help us to fast in it by restraining our limbs from acts of disobedience toward Thee and our employing them in that which pleases Thee, so that we do lend not our ears to idle talk and hurry not with our eyes to diversion, we stretch not our hands towards the forbidden, and stride ...not with our feet toward the prohibited..." Imam Ali ibn Hussein (as)
