Helping Refugees from War-Torn Gaza
January-February 2009 UMF Responds to the call to Sponsor Refugees from Gaza United Muslim Foundation (UMF), a Lake Mary based non-profit organization, begins working with the U.S. State Department in response to a call for sponsors for refugee families that are being evacuated from Gaza. Twenty-two days of attacks leaves Gaza devastated, killing more than 12,00 Palestinians and 13 Israelis and leaving more than 400,000 Gazans without running water and tens of thousands homeless. (Source: Wikipedia.com/BBC)
Thursday, March 12th Refugees from Gaza arrive at MCO After living out of a hotel for months, the refugee family finally arrives at Orlando International Airport where they are warmly greeted by UMF officers with a beautiful welcome balloon, gift baskets for the children and fruit flowers.
Monday, March 16th Refugees from Gaza settle into their Sanford home UMF finds a temporary home in Sanford donated by a Muslim family for six months while the refugee family begins building their life in Orlando. Wonderful locals from all over town visit the family and check up on them, taking food and necessities and offering help. "To see such giving with an open heart in this economy is really very touching." says UMF Executive Director Masuma Virji. UMF has set up a Target Gift Registry under the name 'Gaza Family' and is also accepting used items in good condition for the family. "The road to a better future is long and hard, but with the help of our caring community it appears to be a splendid sunrise in the not too distant horizon." |
Discovering Islam
|
 |
UMF is proud to embark on an exciting venture with Discover Islam to begin distribution of six new documentaries on Islam. The purpose of these documentaries is to dispel the most popular misconceptions about Islam and portray it, and American Muslims, as part of the American mainstream.
Each film has been professionally produced and includes interviews of well known scholars like Sheikh Hamza Yusuf, Professor John Esposito, Dr. Abdullah Hakim Quick, Dr. Umar Faruk Abdallah, Sister Lisa Killinger and Imam Jowhari Abdelmalik amongst many others. Also interviewed are numerous active Muslims and a variety of church leaders across the US.
The topics covered are:
African Americans and Islam, Islam: An American Faith, Islam: Faith and History, Islam: A Faith Hijacked, Christians and Islam, and Women in Islam.
In addition to the video series, a companion booklet is being produced for every documentary and a support website designed to provide further information and closure to those who seek more than just the video and booklet.
UMF will be distributing these videos free of charge to those wishing to learn more about Islam and Muslims. For more information please contact us at info@unitedmuslimfoundation.org
