Nursing Home Update
|
On
March 30, a group of UMF volunteers went to visit with the elderly and
sick at Westminster Care. After going over volunteering rules and
etiquette, they were able to spread around the facility, visiting
various people. Some stayed in Grandma's House, choosing to talk to the children there while others among the group went to different areas.By
the time our few hours there were over, everyone agreed that the
experience had been an enlightening one. UMF plans to continue
volunteering regularly at Westminster Care. |

Salaam Alaikum/Peace be with you,
Part of our mission is to serve humanity. We are reminded many times in the Holy Qur'an
to help those in need, be good to our neighbors, and take care of widows and
orphans. Here at UMF, we've been finding
many opportunities to put this call into action.
In Allentown, our group created Jared Boxes help
brighten the days of chronically ill children. The project was a great
success and was even featured in the news.
We here at UMF are also able to do our small part following the tragedy in Myanmar by
financially helping Islamic Relief to organize a group to fly there with badly
needed supplies and directly distribute to those in need. The people there need all the support they can get. More information on how you can donate is below.
Another area of need that hits closer to home is health care. High medical
insurance costs keep badly needed health care out of reach for many
Muslims. To help with this problem, UMF is teaming up with
the Husseini Islamic Center to hold a Medical Open House on June 14th. If you
know anybody that can help, or who needs medical help, please tell them about the event. We hope to have a number of medical
professionals on hand to aid as many people as they can.
Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. I
know it can be difficult to keep up with every email that hits your
mailbox. I appreciate your time
and attention and hope to see you at an upcoming UMF event soon!
Peace,Naushad Virji, Executive Director

Fundraiser for Myanmar
Described as the worst storm to hit Asia in over 25
years, Tropical Cyclone Nargis left over 22,000 people dead
and another 41,000 missing after it ripped through Myanmar (Burma) just a few days ago.
Many areas of the country are completely cut-off
from aid due to severe flooding and extensive road damage. Aid
agencies are reporting that as many as 1 million people may be left
without access to food, shelter or water. Survivors in the densely
populated and worst-affected region of Irrawaddy Delta face a growing
risk of disease and hunger.
United Muslim Foundation will be collecting donations to help those worst-affected by the cyclone through Islamic Relief, whose emergency response team has been dispatched to Mayanmar to assess the damages.
To donate, please contact any UMF officer or call us at (407) 233-6046. Donations will also be taken at the HIC in Orlando on Saturday, May 10.

Jared Box Update
On
Sunday April 6th, UMF and the Al-Ahad Islamic Center teamed up
to take part in "Interfaith Community Service Day." The
objective of this first-of-its-kind large scale effort was to bring
together a multi-faith coalition for the benefit of the needy in the greater Allentown,
PA
area. A wide representation of congregations of all faiths worked towards one large community service volunteer effort with community service activities beign held throughout the greater Allentown area.
Click here to see pictures of the event, and here to see a news clip.
The volunteer effort that UMF organized was the "Jared Box Project." A Jared Box is a shoebox-size plastic storage box filled with small gifts, toys, cards, and games. Each box contained items selected for a specific age -- in this case, children aged 2 to 4. Alhamdulillah, UMF collected many items for both boys and girls as donations. These included crayons, markers, coloring books, dolls, toy cars, silly putty, Play-Doh, bubbles, stickers, and other small toys. The boxes were then delivered
to Lehigh
Valley Hospital
and given to chronically ill children. The Jared Boxes are intended
to help by providing a special diversion for young patients as they receive
chemotherapy and other medical treatments. Soon after donating the items, UMF received a letter from Linda Hoskins, manager of the Lehigh Valley Hospital Volunteer Department at 17th & Chew Streets. She said: "Upon my arrival [at the emergency area], I was delighted to find out it was a very mature 3 year old and her mother who requested my visit. They wanted to thank me and to show me the many wonderful items they received in their Jared box. The child said that she couldn't talk long because her new doll needed her hair brushed.... Both the nurse and I spoke with Mom who was delighted that her daughter was so busy and content that she forgot all about being upset and unhappy in her new surroundings."
