  • The British colonial raj had mastered the art of divide and rule. In a round table conference regarding the end of British occupation of the colonial India, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of Muslims, was asked an interesting question by a British leader: what kind of Muslim are you? Are you Khoja, Sunni or Shia? He replied with a question: what kind of Muslim was Muhammad? He was none of the three, the British leader replied. Then that is what I am, was Jinnah's reply. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet.

Some Sunnis and Shias use this reply in defiance of the heavy emphasis on these divisions.

The tenth of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, is soon approaching. Both Sunnis and Shias commemorate this day. For Sunnis, according to a Hadith of the Prophet, it is the day God liberated the Children of Israel from the tyranny of Pharaoh. The Prophet and Muslims used to fast on this day. For Shias, this is a special day of commemoration when the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, Hussain, may Allah be pleased with him, was martyred in his struggle against the tyrannical rule of Yazid.

Relations between Shias and Sunnis have not always been intractable. But in the last 26 years, there have been moments when they have been at their worst. One of these was during the 1980-88 Iraq-Iran war, when Saddam Hussain tried to exploit the divisions between the two groups. About 1 million died. Then, incidents in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and most recently Iraq flared up, although both groups had been living together peacefully for decades. What's critical to remember is that all of these flare-ups aren't based solely on religious differences. They are part of a bigger game. In the world where interfaith dialog is big, there is always a need for Intra-faith dialog. It is critical that we engage in necessary Shia-Sunni dialog to save lives and to ensure peaceful world.

    Da'wah at Jum'ah

A teacher from a school in Kutztown is teaching her students about the three major religions in the West and she needs some help teaching them about Islam.

UMF Allentown is arranging for theschool to visit the SIJPA Masjid and learn about Islam firsthand. The teacher will be bringing about 8 to 10 students 6-11 years old with their parents who want to learn more about Islam. They will be visiting during Ju’mah for the khutba, namaaz, and lunch.

UMF volunteers are needed to help welcome our guests and to be on hand to answer questions about Islam and then take the guests for a tour of the Masjid. If you are interested in welcoming these guests and sharing the message of Islam with them, please e-mail shelina@unitedmuslimfoundation.org ASAP to confirm your attendance so that we can ensure that we have enough people to take care of our guests and help answer their questions.

    Sameera Shabaan Recognized for Excellence

UMF Member and Volunteer Sameera Shaban was featured in the Orlando Sentinel recently as an Academic All- Star. Holding a 4.40 GPA, Sameera is also a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Beta Chi and Hands on Orlando.

When asked about her accomplishments she says "My achievements are only as important as the lessons I've learned from them, whether it's being thankful for my blessings or pushing myself to pursue any achievement, big or small."

Sameera plans to attend University, insha-Allah and attain success in a job while helping society. UMF is proud to have Sameera Shabaan as part of our team making a difference!

    Secret Angels - Mission Accomplished!

UMF secret angels gathered together gift certificates for Publix and Winn Dixie and many new and used toys and clothes in response to a call for help for a young mother who is suffering from cancer and lives with her husband, aged parents and three children: a girl age 11, a boy age 7 and a baby boy age 2.

The family was truly thankful and our greatest gift was seeing them so happy and being able to do our little bit to help.

    UMF Holiday Elves Report

UMF Orlando volunteers were busy during the holidays helping the Kids House of Seminole County with thier fundraiser giftwrap at the Altamonte Springs Mall this year. This was a real fun event where friends signed up to wrap gifts and collected proceeds toward providing a child friendly facility for information gathering and treatment for victims of abuse.

UMF Allentown teamed up with Salvation Army again to assist in a wonderful cause, to ensure that all underprivileged children received toys and gifts for the holidays! The "Toy Wrapping" was a huge success alhamdulil-Lah as volunteers gave a little of themselves to put smiles on the faces of children and their families in need.
