Your Success Thought for the Week of April 29, 2009
|
Your people are starved for good news to motivate them,
to make them excited about their jobs again.
This may be a conscious, but more likely a subconscious need.
We often make motivating our people much more complicated
and difficult than it needs to be. What
if it were as simple as putting up a board in a visible place to celebrate your
people's accomplishments and to allow them to celebrate each others
successes?
Here's a concept from the 'Celebrate Values and
Victories' segment of Kouzes/Posner's The Leadership Challenge:
"Our friend, author Hal Zina Bennett, tells the story of
recognition in his parents' small furniture factory. During the Christmas rush, his father always
hired extra workers, and since they were temporary hires, motivation was often
a problem.
One day, Hal's dad installed what he called a 'Bragging
Board' at the entrance where employees hung up their coats. Whenever he wanted to acknowledge an employee
for an achievement, he wrote a quick thank-you note and pinned it to the board
for all to see.
People appreciated the notes, and they left them pinned
to the board in public view rather than taking them down and storing them in a
private place. Then they started attaching their own notes to the board,
announcing achievements and family events outside of work that they wanted to
brag about.
The 'Bragging Board' helped to create a sense of
community and camaraderie; it reinforced the fact that people's humanness
mattered.
The success of the 'Bragging Board' also demonstrates
that people love to participate in the recognition of achievements and special
milestones in their lives."
Knowing and acting upon your people's needs elevates them
to a new level. It's a simple formula:
appreciation and recognition breeds enthusiastic appreciation, loyalty,
creativity and work harder in return.
What
if something as simple as a 'Bragging Board' motivated your people to be 1% more
productive than last week, and if this 1% continued each week as new items were
placed on the board? |
Enjoy your discoveries and
have a grand week.
