Thought for the Week
Your Success Thought for the Week of March 25, 2009
Turn On Your Brights
Have you experienced the sensation of arriving at a destination having no idea how you got there?  Sure, you were the driver; you remember leaving your office or home; and then all of the sudden here you are--at your destination.

What happens during that space and time?  You were clearly aware of traffic or you would have caused an accident.  You made the correct turns.  You enjoyed a favorite song, CD or radio talk show while in route--that you can remember.

Yet you were not fully conscious, in the moment, focused on alternative routes.  You just floated to the same old destination, as many of us do day after day.

Now consider driving at night in the same semiconscious state.  You can see the road ahead but are not fully focused. Something tells you that you'd see it much clearer with the high beams, or bright lights on.  You switch them on and voila!

By making that switch, your world opened up.  You see all around you.  It's like turning on surround sound--you are alive, focused. What if you could turn on that ray of light in your mind in a split second as you can with your car headlights? You can!

No matter what you are dealing with, shining a bright light on it will allow you to see it more clearly.  In being more conscious, you see what you were missing and identify what is truly important.

You may even see where you've been lying to yourself or to others. It is like pointing the strength and power of a laser beam on a piece of steel. That focus cuts through steel like butter by focusing its intention and shining its intense light on only one thing.

How does one 'shine a bright light' on their dilemma?

Silence:
"Silence is the true friend that never betrays" ~Confucius.
  • Mini Breaks:  Get away from it all, even for five minutes in your office several times each day by muting your phone and closing your eyes.  Imagine a headlight above your head shining brightly, exposing what was not visible to you before.
  • The Great Outdoors:  Nature speaks the language of silence.  Walk silently or sit in a park.  Enjoy the same vision of a bright light bringing clarity and pushing out anything that is not important to this specific issue.
  • Silent Retreats: I'll write more about this concept next week.  The key is alone time for an afternoon, one day or preferably a few days.  You talk to no one, are influenced by no one (including radio while driving or TV).
Invite Fresh Insight:  Deep meaningful insight from others, those whom you typically do not call upon, can be worth its weight in gold. To shine a bright light bring in new forms of insight.
  • Hire a Coach:  A professional coach who's been around for a while can provide 'high beam' insight from many perspectives, oftentimes by asking the right questions.
  • Complimentary Expertise:  Seek complimentary experts rather than those in your industry.  For example, if you are an attorney, you likely deal with the same clients/issues as a CPA or financial planner.  Each can shine a light from his perspective.
  • Go National:  If your challenge is specific to your situation and none of the above techniques will work for you, pick up the phone and call your favorite author or expert in your field.  You may be surprised to hear them pick up the other line.  Be prepared for them to do so.
Stop merely arriving at destinations.  Create greater results by shining a bright beam on whatever dilemma is holding you back at the moment.
Enjoy your discoveries and have a grand week.
