Thought for the Week
Your Success Thought for the Week of January 7, 2009
Close Doors to Open Opportunities
Happy New Year!  As you move forward into new experiences in '09, it is necessary to leave certain things behind.  That's the tough part.

As much as you try to rationalize or justify tough decisions such as leaving a job, group, or individual, sometimes you just know when it's time to close that door.

You've belabored the 'pros and cons' and listed numerous alternative approaches. You've analyzed reasons to leave as 'I don't have time' (which may be true, but is only one part of the equation). In the end you discover that it's quite simple-all things have their seasons.

In the recesses of your mind you know you are no longer your best in this particular environment. It's time to leave so that someone new can come in and reenergize things.  The relationships developed were gifts, and resulting memories cherished.

Why is it so difficult to close doors?  Here are some blocks I've observed in my executive clients, perhaps one will ring true for you:
  • Tenacity - "If I keep working at it, it will get better!"
  • Guilt - "I may disappoint someone else by doing what's right for me."
  • Fear - "What if...?"
Next comes the excitement of the 'new'.  Here are several rewards my clients have experienced from having the courage to close doors to start anew:
  • Excitement - opening the next door is exhilarating.
  • Passion - discovering new passions and zeal for life.
  • Health - mental, emotional and physical health will actually benefit with thoughts of something new, opening new brain pathways for creativity.
  • Love - leaving a situation that is working well but not great is an act of love, both for 'you' and for others involved.
  • Accomplishment - an ultimate sense of accomplishing what was previously merely a thought, then a dream, then a reality.
It's a brand new year. I invite you to look around you at what is working good but not great.  Your choices are to:
  • Improve it--even slight changes will bring results
  • Accept it--'great' is not always necessary or desired, oftentimes 'good' is enough.  The key is to be happy with 'good', or
  • Close that door--make room for someone who will make it great...

Selecting the latter allows you the time and space to go out and make something else amazing.  It's a win-win scenario!

Enjoy your discoveries and have a grand week.
Ann
