Thought for the Week
Your Success Thought for the Week of November 5, 2008
Sharing Good News
A common concern I hear these days is:  "How can I keep my team, family, friends from complaining when there is so much negativity out there?"

No matter who you influence, know that you are a leader.  Your words, attitudes and actions count.  You can have one of three effects on those around you: bring them up, bring them down, or leave them neutral. I hope you agree that influencing people in a positive manner is important.

"When people feel good, they work their best.  Feeling good lubricates mental efficiency, making people better at understanding information, more optimistic about their ability to achieve a goal.  Their creativity and decision-making skills are thus enhanced.  Laughter can stimulate open lines of communication, strengthen a sense of connection and trust and make work more fun. A study of sixty-two CEOs and their top management teams found that the more positive the overall moods of the people in the top management team, the more cooperatively they worked together-and the better the company's business results." Daniel Goleman, Primal Leadership.

How do you influence people in a positive manner with all of the negativity swirling around you?  Look for individual or team successes and share them often.  Seek out good news to share.  There's plenty at your fingertips through a simple web search. For example, here is what I found on this site: Positive Economic News

  • Verizon's profits Up 31%--Verizon announced profits of $1.67 billion for the third quarter, up from $1.27 billion the same quarter a year ago.
  • Honeywell International Inc's up 16.3%--third-quarter profit rose a better-than-expected 16.3 perc.ent on strong sales of thermostats and other equipment used to manage large commercial buildings.
  • Existing home sales rose to a 5.18 million-unit annual rate--according to the National Association of Realtors. It was the first time the sales pace had risen above its year ago level in nearly three years, a sign the market could be stabilizing.
  • Americans drove 78.1 billion fewer miles--in the ten month period from November '07 August '08, compared to the same period a year ago.
  • The index of leading indicators for September rose 0.3%. The briefing forecast said it would be down 0.4% while the market was expecting a drop of 0.1%....up is good, especially after 5 months of falling.

There's much to celebrate, even in today's world.  Look for good news, share it, and enjoy the rewards of making a difference in someone's world, if even for a few moments.  Studies show this will increase your profit. Your heart tells you that this is simply a better way to live.

Enjoy your discoveries and have a great week!
