Fourth Quarter Challenge

We’re entering into the ‘danger zone’ time of year. The holidays are just around the corner. Year-end demands are right in front of us. Regrets of what we’ve not accomplished thus far this year are seeping in. Or perhaps you’re still in ‘Indian Summer’ mode and this hasn’t hit you yet; but if you’re like many of my clients, it may strike you soon.

Where did all of those well-intentioned New Year Resolutions go? Some may be asking yourselves: “Do I have the energy to do all that’s expected of me, all that I expect of myself this next three months?” Don’t you think there might be an easier way to end the year?

The answer is “Yes.” Start something new this year. Set 4th quarter goals that are just for you! Challenge yourself to make this year different. Instead of focusing on what you can do (or have to do) for your company, family, church or even friends, focus first on what you can and will do for yourself in these coming three months. Challenge yourself.

Sound selfish? I guarantee you that if you take on this challenge all of the above mentioned entities will benefit - enormously. You’ll accomplish more professionally, have more natural energy, richer relationships, and be more disciplined with the fudge that will soon emerge from all directions.

Here are some 4th quarter challenges my clients have come up with for themselves for the next 13 weeks:

   - Swim 100 miles (from a person who typically swims ‘6’ miles/week)
   - Run 400 miles (from a person who typically runs 25 miles/week)
   - Read 12 books (from a person who typically reads 2 books/month)
   - Hire and work with a personal fitness trainer now (not January 1)
   - Spend 30 minutes in silence each day (from a person struggles with silence)

These individuals realize their year is far from over. They’ve replaced self-imposed pressure and regret with a game plan designed by them, specifically for them.

Imagine how they will feel on New Year’s Eve having accomplished their 4th quarter challenge. How will this shift the way they look back at their year? How much more fired up for 2009 will they be having ended ’08 on such a high note.

Walter Linn writes: “It is surprising what a man can do when he has to, and how little most men will do when they don’t have to.”

I challenge you to come up with your own 4th quarter goal in order to end this year with a feeling of high level accomplishment, not regret. I’d love to hear your goals and suggestions for others as they move through what could otherwise be a ‘danger zone’ in ending their year.

Enjoy your discoveries and have a grand week!

Ann

A Testimonial

" “Thank you. I especially liked this one. I'm President of the board of "Friends of KRVM," a small public radio station in Eugene, OR. I often feel pressure to "have the answer." Your approach seems much more useful, and I hope will foster more leadership among board members.” ~ Bobbie Cirel, Development Director 91.9 KRVM, Eugene, Oregon. "
