Thought of the Week
Your Success Thought for the Week of July 2, 2008.

Set Yourself Free

A number of you responded quite favorably to last week’s success thought on ‘change.’ A common theme of your e-mails was that you wanted more—more examples, techniques and suggestions.

Why did this topic hit a chord with so many of you? Because ‘change’ is one of the most difficult endeavors in life to maneuver. Daunting as it is, some people never attempt it, and many never accomplish it.

Let’s look at two celebrity examples:

Helen Hunt (example of staying in the safety zone, no changes)

Though Helen Hunt has been in 30 movies, she is still the same person. The viewer identifies with her persona, “Oh, it’s Helen Hunt again,” rather then being intrigued by each new character she plays. She seems unable to let go of her argumentative personality.

She’s gone from an confrontational wife in ‘Mad About You’ in to a grouchy single mom waitress in ‘As Good as it Gets’ in the 90’s to a suspicious, quarrelsome mom in ‘Pay it Forward.’

She is predictable. Do you want to be known as predictable or someone who is unwilling to make bold changes and shake things up for the greater good?

On the other hand, we have many talented and versatile actors who are willing to take risks.

Pierce Brosnan (example of a skilled change agent)

Pierce Brosnan has starred in 38 movies, artfully changing his persona all the time.

Brosnan went from the charming romantic ‘Remington Steele’ in the 80’s, to the cold-blooded killer and womanizer ‘James Bond’ in the 90’s, to a burned out, pot-bellied hit-man in ‘Matador,’ to singing and dancing in the ‘Mamma Mia’ musical in the 00’s with several other changes in between. Brosnan keeps things current and alive.

In each endeavor, he relinquished his past persona for the current one he inhibits. Thus, the viewers are more intrigued. This translates into a win/win for all involved.

Take a stronger look at the roles you play this week. Do you stay safe like Hunt or are you an ever evolving creature who is not afraid to take calculated risks and make bold changes like Brosnan?

Set yourself free to experiment and enjoy your discoveries.
