"To Grow or To Die"
Your Success Thought for the Week of January 9, 2008

My profession fascinates me. Within a very short time of working with any new client, I have the honor of seeing who they are at the core, beyond the stories they tell about themselves to themselves or to others. One of the most intriguing aspects of seeing individuals at this core level is that they are either growing or dying inside.

Think of any successful business. The leaders are constantly striving to be better at what they do through small (or major) enhancements, or, by reinventing themselves. Now, think of a business that has failed. They cling to old ways of doing things with the false assumption that what worked yesterday will work today.

The same is true for people. A phrase that I've heard often is: "The smartest amongst us have the most to learn." How have these individuals become so smart? They have a pure passion to learn. This quickly translates into success. These 'smartest' individuals are constantly growing, questioning whether yesterday's thoughts and behaviors are valid today.

How do you know if you are growing or dying?

You are growing if you are:

  • Curious about how you can continually improve
  • Seeking out new approaches to your daily activities
  • Looking for new avenues of learning
  • Eager to take on new challenges
  • Always looking for people and concepts to intrigue you
  • An optimist, searching for ways to make things better than they were yesterday
  • You are likely dying inside if you are:

  • Certain that you 'know it all'
  • Set on showing the world the 'perfect' you
  • Not open to new ideas, approaches
  • Instantly judging people rather than listening, being present
  • Dismissing new ideas before you've fully thought them through
  • A pessimist, rationalizing how things are and why they can't possibly get better
  • This is a brand new year, an excellent time to hold a mirror up to who you've become. Are you growing or dying inside? If you are unsure, ask for feedback, as those around you surely know.

Next, decide if this is what you want. If not, change. Books like Learned Optimism, Taming Your Gremlin, The Power of Full Engagement or The Power of Now may help. Or, you can find a strong mentor or execuitve coach to ignite your changes.

Enjoy your discoveries and have a grand week. Happy New Year!

    P. S. We'd love to hear how you used our 'Success Thought of The Week' in your business or personal dealings.

"Your December 5th Success Thought regarding "Be Here Now" held great timing for us. My wife and I have recently taken on some major projects. We need to live in the moment and be thankful. That is the one thing I would add to your list - Be thankful. Just sit back and think of 5-10 things you are thankful for--family, health, kids, wife, business, home, intelligence etc. That helps me stay in the moment."
