"Wake Up"
Your Success Thought for the Week of October 25, 2006

This is your week to come alive. Far too many of us walk through each day at the same pace as yesterday or last week. Be it fast or slow, it rarely varies. It’s time to shake things up and produce new more dynamic results.

To do this you need: spontaneity, creativity, focus and humor. Begin today to make your world more adventurous and alive with the following tools and techniques.

Spontaneity: Do you travel the same way to work every day; putting on lipstick at the same stoplights; making those rushed phone calls or getting upset with the same old news? Stop. Kick your old habits out the window for one week and try something new. Wake up fifteen minutes earlier to add more peace to your morning; try a different route; turn off the cell phone and radio; notice the fall colors, new construction and children giggling at the bus stops. Pick up coffee for an associate with whom you rarely connect or bottled water for the entire team you typically rush by each morning.

Creativity: Adding a touch of creativity to your day takes more thought than time. An easy way to begin is with how you greet people. Begin immediately to cut out the stale “How ya doing?”, “What’s up?”, “What’s new?” These overused greetings are flat and predictable. Instead, go with the first thing that comes to you, like: “Did Brandon win his game?” “Is this sensational weather or what?”, “Have you been to the club lately? How is your racquetball game?” These greetings capture the recipient’s attention and add depth to even the briefest of interactions. And, they are more fun.

Focus: In this wild and crazy life we’ve created for ourselves it’s often challenging to focus on just one thing at a time, like the person in front of you instead of the nearby computer screen. Curiosity is one of the best tools I know of to stay focused. If you’re really engaged and asking questions, how can you not be focused? The key is also to listen to the answers. I have an associate who is fabulous at asking the most provocative questions, but rarely remains focused long enough to listen to the answers. Her mind is already on the next big thing. Other tools to help you stay focused in the present moment: breathe deeply and evenly; master the art of eye contact, noticing the nuances of each individual’s eyes; heighten awareness of body language (yours and theirs) to get a greater sense of who this person is, not merely what they are saying.

Humor: Oftentimes, at the most intense and inappropriate moments in my coaching, I’ll bring in a new twist — humor. Why? It catches people off guard and instantly stimulates a new thought pattern. As they let go of their anger, disappointment, doubt, or insecurities for even a moment they become so much more creative. New approaches and a brand new sense of clarity comes to them once they let go of the upsets they have been carrying for weeks, perhaps even years. Why not stretch yourself and wake up those around you with a new approach to bring about a more alive, creative humor?

I love hearing your stories of how these weekly success thoughts play out in your life. Please keep them coming as I truly value each and every one.

Have an outstanding week and enjoy your discoveries!
