Your Success Thought on "Urgency"
August 24, 2005
Urgency seems to be swirling in and around us these days. Whether you’re introducing a new concept to your board, preparing for ‘back to school’ or closing a big deal, whomever you’re dealing with wants what they want NOW! I have nothing against a healthy sense of ‘urgency’. In fact it’s a useful tool in some instances, but not all. Where we go wrong is in living an urgent life. Like anything that flows fast and furiously, it needs time to regenerate...or it fizzles out.Think of someone you know - someone who walks, talks and breathes ‘urgency’. Is she in control or constantly behind the eight ball? Do you trust this person with your most sensitive client? Do you question his judgment? How effective is her communication style? Does she listen and learn? Ironically, we often lose our sense of urgency and trust in dealing with someone like this. Face it, not everything can be urgent. Your power is in discernment. If you are this urgent person, chances are high that you question your own judgement, which translates into wasted hours of second guessing yourself and others. You appear confident, but are quaking inside. Your trust factor is low and your fear is high. You are exhausted and frustrated much of the time. People just don't understand the pressure you're under. I say the following with all due respect: 'Please get over yourself!' Some people feel that 'urgency' makes them appear important. Others use it as a barrier to keep people at a distance. Either way, it is not a way to build cohesive long term working relationships. To distinguish yourself in an urgent environment do what others are not willing to do. Take a breath, look at the big picture, decide what is truly important and act upon it. Urgency has its place. Use it as a wisely placed tool, not an exhausting method of operation. My request of you as you ponder this concept this week is to be discerning and use urgency judiciously. Enjoy your discoveries and have an outstanding week.
