Your Success Thought on "Action"
June 08, 2005

There comes a time when we need to stop thinking and start acting. Some people never reach this magic moment. You know the kind, they drive you nuts! "Why don't they just make up their mind and move forward?"

The following threefold process will turn your future actions into an art rather than merely another bland decision:

  1. Know when you've considered 'enough' options.
  2. Move forward in a timely and efficient manner.
  3. Learn from your 20/20 hindsight.

Know that 'enough is enough' with your analysis when: a) you've gone over all possible scenarios until you're boring even yourself; b) you've sought out appropriate advisors for their input, and c) you know in your heart what is right. You're now ready to act.

Some of us feel we need 'approval' to take action. My experience is that the only person we need approval from is ourselves. Some live in agonizing fear and self-doubt: "Am I making a mistake?" If you need more time or facts, get them. If not, time to move forward.

I applaud decisive individuals who know when the time has come to act. Their seamless moves are timely and efficient. Whether it is deciding which Blackberry to purchase or to leave a job or relationship, their energy is well spent.

Learning from our 20/20 hindsight is a vital, mostly overlooked step. Instead, we want to move quickly into our next dilemma. Or, we allow guilt to take place of our learning: "Why did it take so long to make this decision?" "How could I have done this?" "Why did I allow that to happen?"

The key is to 'get the learning.' What is there for you to learn from taking weeks instead of hours or even minutes to take this action? What did this cost you? What will you change next time? Is it a matter of scheduling the appropriate time to do your research? Is it procrastination or simply not asking the right questions?

Valuable data is available to us every minute of every day if we'll slow down long enough to take it in. Life is too short to be indecisive. Looking back, we more often regret actions we didn't take than those we did.

What action can you take on this week to simplify your life, create more freedom or income? Set your sights on the future. What do you want? What's your best strategy?

Whatever it is, step into action and get your learning. Trust yourself and have an action packed week!
